Why didn't Muir push the pace?

Yeah she strikes me as someone who could run one big race .

Um - Pre was a superior runner to Muir in their Olympic years ( 72 was when Pre ran the long-build strategy in the OG finals). His best that year was set at the USA Olympic Trials in 13.22.8 The World Record at the time was 13.16.6 or just over 6 seconds difference. Lasse Viren later after the games lowered it a fraction. So since Muir's is 3:57 is 7 seconds slower than the world record on a shorter race...sorry, you are wrong.

Muir is a good runner but throwing shade on Pre is not helpful to your argument.

I think you all are underestimating the awesomeness of Laura Muir in 2016. She ran 3:57, beating Hasan, just a few weeks before the games. #2 in the world. Behind her the rankings were thin - fast into the 3:50-400 range.

I think she could have run away from a lot more than half the field, especially when they were all expecting a slow first 800. They woulda been caught napping and Muir proved at London that she can time trial sub 4.

I'll accept that in a 3 round 1500 she might have felt tired. that's a good counter point.

er...re; the ranking - fast into the 3:59-400 range. And those were mostly in May, not set recently. Muir was peaking, man!

Regardless, I don't think she could have done better. As was said, she couldn't drop most of the field running 4:00 and she would have been toast on the last lap. People say she should have done a long drive to the finish, and that's exactly what she attempted. Dibaba went with 750 to go and Muir covered the move because that's probably when she had been planning to make her own move. Unfortunately, it was way too fast and both she and Dibaba died (although she died much worse). Only thing she could have done was hang back a bit more on the third lap, but she went for the win and it didn't work out.

I don't agree that everyone's goal should just be to medal. Muir probably thought she could win, and she went for it. She failed. It happens. But I applaud the effort, just like many people applaud Pre for trying to become Olympic champion rather than holding back for third place.

Tom Osborn went for two, Pre went for it and died, and so did Muir. It makes sports great.

20/20 hindsight.

You can only say that because you saw it happen.

in the 1500 Muir could very well of ran off in a group of three, same as Jager, and also won a silver medal.

The rankings look pretty much the same to me muir and jager. Muir was #2, Jager #3. Although I'm not sure who of the other top 10 athletes were actually in the races at rio.
