There is nothing to teach, just look at bumps on the F and J keys. That's how your index fingers find them.
Left fingers ASDF, right fingers JKL;. No finger has to move more than one space to hit any key, except Y and B. You will learn to hate typing Y or B but that's a small price to pay for the speed gained.
Likewise on the keypad, middle finger on the 5.

At 40 I was in the same boat. Started using typing.com and the Chrome app typinghero. Went through all the exercises and practices for the first 8 months; now I just do the tests. In the beginning I was at 12 wpm, and almost 4 years later I am at about 55 wpm with about 97% accuracy. It is definitely easier to write my own work, and it saves a lot of time. I practice about 10 to 20 minutes a day, in addition to regular writing assignments ( just finishing up my M.A thesis this week). It is hard to go from my keyboard to a strange keyboard though.
Whatever program you decide on, listen to it when it tells you not to look at the keyboard.
In schools, they used to have kids use devices that covered up their hands and keyboard as a physical barrier to looking at the keys.

I took typing in 1987 in high school. We learned on IBM Selectric typewriters.
I can type 125 wpm -- it was one of the most useful classes I ever took.
Because I was born in 1990 I learned to type fast and mostly correctly using the old AIM chat. Nothing like the prospect of talking to girls in 9th grade to get your typing up to speed quickly.
Took typing senior year of high school, best class ever that I took.
Missed the first few weeks of school. teacher wouldn't let me in the class, finally agreed as I did extra practice. Took me 1 semester to catch up to the class, was 2nd fastest by the end of the year at 59 wpm. This was just typing from a basic schoolbook, not the best method.
Got "faster typing" by hossfield & nelson, practiced on my own through the summer and typed 76 wpm on my mom's old manual typewriter, and 72 wpm for a hour of typing.
Took a test my first time ever on electric typewriter, keys reacting all over the place during warmup, somehow managed to pass, good job and kept getting promoted higher in the school system, because of this as a basis, one of the best skills that I ever learned.
Later came in 15 minutes early for work to practice 10 minutes every day, and got up to 95 wpm perfect on high syllabic (difficult) material. That was many decades ago and typing still is very easy for me.
My spouse had taken typing 3 times and could only type 30 wpm. They never told her to not look at the keyboard! She practiced from my book, got up to 59 wpm in one semester and got a promotion to a much better position at her work.
Perfect practice helps you to improve quite quickly.

I am a senior in high school this next year and decided to learn how to type during the summer before my freshman year. Once I learned where the keys were and what fingers to hit them with, it took me less than a few months to become competent at it. I can type comfortably at 70-80 wpm now.
