Get your PR's up on the board. For now on anybody make a new PR da Statman take note and record how many seconds he beat it by. At da end of da year we see who win.
does it count if i've already taken 13 seconds off a pr this year? hope so.
i'm hoping to go from 9:33 to sub-9 in the 3000 and 16:49 to 15:40 in the 5k.
feel free to laugh at my pr's. i was a half-miler in high school.
Well guys I am in!
Portland Runner I am up for the Thon at Chicago 03 or 04!!
It sounds like fun.
O.k. here is the plan.
4:02 mile. 13:59 ( just to say I broke 14 once). 1:06 1/2 marathon. and ofcourse anything under 2:22 in the thon.
I'll keep you up to date on how this is all coming along.
Glad to see this thread finally get a little traction.
Thank you Statman... we are much obliged!
du-can, I think we should make this competition good for all of 2003. So, as long as Statman has your previous mark, then you should get your recent 13 second improvement. Congrats!! But don't hold your breath with that, though.
Sjm1368, aren't you in HS in Houston? I guess we will have to get a Dr. Pepper Big Gulp or something for you (or maybe if you win, you can just remind me in a few years).
Portland, I like the meeting at the marathon idea. However, '04 is a bit out there yet. Maybe we could just set up a time to meet up at the expos or something? We should think some more on that one. Looks like a lot are planning on Chi-town '03.
If you are not on Statman's list, get on it. And, I think only those who respond to this thread will be eligible for the big winnings.
In case yo missed it, a
FREE BEER (courtesy of JEH) is on the line.
(Truly sad that this is what it takes to get a few of you to respond).
Pete,
My man, please tell me that that double wink of yours negates the assertion. No freakin' way am I catman. I scream this from the highest mountain. Wejo, if I lie, ban me for life!!
I am almost willing to do this - even for 2003 - I must say that 2004 seems too long away. My only caveat is that I'd like to see people shoot for specific times and not necessarily PRs.
The only real problem I see is that when you all meet me you will be jealous because I am an incredibly handsome man with a very hot wife. I never want anyone to feel bad, so just know that if we do it, you are sure to be really good at something that I am not good at. Take comfort in that.
Hmmm...Chicago 2003 - I like the sound of that.
Well I will throw my marathon pr out there, which i have never included because it sucks. 255:06.
My goal is to lower it to 235!
Willy,
just funnin' with you, man. What'll you be aiming for? You've been pretty evasive about PRs on this board. If you want in, you need to provide some baseline data for statman to compare relative gains.
I'm shooting for 2:37 this year, or about 8 minutes off my PB. I'm visualizing it already. Never been to Chicago before, and my wife would like to train for a fall marathon, so maybe we'll make a trip of it, provided we both stay healthy and get the miles in.
Pete,
I've been evasive on the PRs too. My marathon PR sucks so bad that I'm not really wanting to put it out there, but here goes - 2:55. Oddly enough, I've done much better at shorter distances AND the two ultras I've run, but I've always had trouble with the marathon, and my slowest marthon time is so slow it is hard to believe (not sharing that one!). What I should have done is run some marathons while in good ultra shape.
Right now this day I am in shape enough to run a 10 miler right on one hour. Beyond that I don't know, but October is a long way away.
So, if I were to do it I would aim for sub 3:00 and then go for a PR if my training were going well - but, as I get older I notice more aches and pains and more nagging injuries that I didn't have when younger.
Anyway, I am excited about this possibility, but I will have to mull it over and see how the training goes before I will commit. Can't send in a mailed registration form until March anyway.
The Chicago 03 Let's Run Competition sounds like a great idea. Age groups and open divisions would be fun. It would be an honor to get my ass kicked in the 35-39 age division (hoping to be in 2:37 shape by October, which should get me about 100th place in the let's run list)
Would also be very interesting to put faces to board names - though would the board be the same if people actually met those who pissed on them in some thread?
max,
we'd likely be running side by side and duking it out in the same division, so there'd be more than just beer on the line (not sure what they give out for like 40th and 41st spot in the 35-39 age group). I would like to do better than 2:37'ish, but I expect that's about the limits of my ability if well trained and supported by fully aligned planets. Maybe a second beer for age division battles!
mmmmmmmmmmm... ...beer
marathon PR of 2:37:42
i'll be shooting for 2:27 on sunday at vegas.
count me in for the Chicago challenge.
sehon40,
your name made the listings in our local rag this past Sunday, in the middle of bumblef*** Canada. They NEVER list running race results. Have you done any wind tunnel studies to try to establish the equivalent mild-day finish time? I think you can claim a 2:27 (with an asterisk) in your log based on the wind that day.
Hope to see you at the finish in Chicago

sjm1968, congrats on the nifty PR if that 4:01 is true. Looks like you might have a big beer (Dr. Pepper) coming your way.
But.. then again... I am not about to let a HSer beat me without a fight! Who's with me?! Seems like we should get some collegiate skin on this action... no downside.... FREE BEER. plus, now you are all going to look like total pansies if you're scared of sjm1968.
Seriously, though, nice run... it'd be nice if you have a few more seconds to squeeze out??? I think you should do that. Maybe I'll go to the state meet this year.
I'm glad to see this thread has had at least some longevity (mostly cause JEH is persistent), and now that my achilles had healed, at least for the moment, I shall enter the fray.
Of course my entrance is not likely to be too successful as I'm coming off 11 weeks of cross-training, and I only had 6 weeks of workouts before my season ends (which is 3 weeks from now). Right, well now I've lined up my excuses. I'm gonna go after the 5k pr, as I only have 2 races left a 5k, and then a 10k at conferences which will sure to be a tactical race.
5k: 15:24.24 - hoping to knock down 8 days from now.
Next fall, however, I will attempt to take down both my 8 and 10k prs. I realize the fall is a long way away, but in case this thread lives, the prs are...
10k: 32:13
5 mile: 26:06 (yes I realize my 10k pr is a faster pace than my 5 mile, this is because the 10k course was much faster, and the 10k was two weeks after the 5 miler, a two weeks I very much needed as I was hurt for 6 weeks in the fall).
And yes I know what you're thinking, man this kid is always hurt. Well I was hurt twice this year, and never before that. Perhaps my luck will hold out so I can rise up to mediocrity next year in my fourth and final year of collegiate running. Right, I hope you're not still reading, as I just posted 84 paragraphs about myself. I will beat kannapolis.
Okay ... I'm in. I've been putting off putting up my PR's on Statman's list because they are at the bottom of the pile, but I will do it for the sake of a beer.
Well, I'm not on Statman's list but here's what I'm looking to beat:
Marathon PR: 2:51:57 -- want to beat at either Boston or Whistlestop (WI) this year
5 Mile PR: 26:18 -- hoping to beat this summer
5k PR: 15:59 -- will have plenty of chances to beat.
JEH,
it's clear to me that if Average Joe trains properly for the marathon, he'll win the beer, as he's got about 20 minutes or so on the table, based on his 5k and 5 mile.
No offense, Joe, but I'm praying you start too fast and die in the 'thon. It's for BEER, after all.
I'm in the same boat as Howdy Doody. At 53 the odds of improving my Masters PR's aren't that great. But aafter 35+ years of training like a 440 runner, I have decided to try training like a distance runner, and I hope to shave a couple of second off of my 5k and 10k PRs this year.
I think that we should have some sort of contest, and Weldon et al should organize it.
It should not be based on raw PR's, but on % improvement or something like that.
What do you think?
He can give away something like a hug-and-kiss from Paula Radcliffe or something.
