If it's consistent range, it's Eluid. Eluid has run a ton of sub 7:30 3ks. sub 13, low 2:04 or better marathons. And he has maintained high level for 13 years now. Haile started his downward slide in 2001 and he didn't last long in the road circuit(neither did Paul Tergat).

Geb did his marathon debut in 2002.

Thats only 2 seconds off the WR in the 1500m.

While he doesn't have a stellar marathon to his name yet he did run 3:28.93 for 1500m on July 17, 2015 and 59:23 for half marathon on Sep 13, 2015 less than two months later.

oh and he was double gold at the world champs for 5000m and 10,000m between the two races.

That is true range being able to run fast for any distance at a single moment in time. All these other examples are spread out over a long career.

Don't forget, Bekele is the greatest XC runner of all time. OF ALL TIME.

Who cares about range? Kipchoge has 1 WC title and that is all. If he does not win in Rio then his range has not accomplished all that much.

Of course, most win die for a WC title, but when you are talking greatest anything - then someone with one title is not really in the discussion. Other than to make some people feel better for not winning more.

When the discussion is SPECIFICALLY about range then yes someone with only one title can be in the discussion.

Agree. In these discussions, Haile typically gets far too little credit for being an AMAZING trailblazer at 5 and 10K, and not too bad at the marathon, either. Not the OPs question, but who else in history can compare in this respect at 5K thru marathon?

HOWEVER, if the 3:50 quoted for Kipchoge is accurate, the GROAT competition between them is, indeed, pretty tight. Especially since Kipchoge's marathon record is, now, arguably better than Haile's (particularly the "racing others" part). On the OTHER hand, back to trailblazing, how much has Kipchoge taken down the WR? Close call, but Haile still wins!!

Range is a meaningless concept unless it actually leads to winning something. It's only "to make some people feel better for not winning more." Whoop de do. Let's make a special medal just for that.

Kipchoge does win a lot. He's won a lot of marathons, but not the big race yet. If he does not win in Rio, then his London win loses a lot of it's meaning. A great result, but maybe he should have concentrated on the most important race rather than peaking too early.

If he wins, then it's great and his range has lead him to be the best current marathoner. All his other wins and great times serve to prove he's the best. There will be no real debate that for these past 2-3 years he's the best. If he loses, the debates will never stop.

There are always those people who concentrate moe on great times or the number of great races, but the point of running is to run the best at the most important day. I'd much rather be Frank Shorter than Bill Rogers. Rogers ran better (marathon) times, and he won more majors, but Gold and Silver (or Gold again if you discount cheats) is far better.

Heck, I'd rather be Billy Mills than Ron Clarke. One great, amazing race at just the right time over years of dominance and world records, but that's me. I know a lot would disagree.

Dude, aouita had like 5 of the 6 fastest 3ks of all time by 1989 and was the first under 13:00 for 5k. 1 year removed from an Olympic medal over 800m. Range!
