I cannot really answer this, but I would love to know why people own microwaves. I am not anti-microwave, but I have never seen the need for them. When I got married, my wife had one and it sat on our counter and never got used. So we gave it to Goodwill when we moved and never bought a new one.
I am not a particularly great eater, but I don't eat microwave dinners. Heating stuff in a toaster over or on the stove is easy and quick and I would assume it tastes better. The only leftovers we ever have are typically pieces of pizza, and a toaster over is so much better for pizza. A microwave just makes it chewy and wet.
Don't get me wrong, I have used them in the past. If it works out best, great, but I cannot imagine a scenario where a mic is better than a toaster oven.
I use the microwave for just about everything actually. My wife and I are big on leftovers. We purposely make extra the first time so we can just stick it in the microwave the next night and have dinner ready in a minute or less. Sure, a re-heated porkchop or piece of chicken tastes better fresher, but I'm not that picky. You could use the stove top and a frying pan to re-heat these types of food, but microwave is easier.
Same with pasta. How do you re-heat pasta if not the microwave? When I cook pasta I make a whole box and then have plenty of leftovers for lunches and dinners. Heating up sauce? Microwave takes a few seconds and then I don't have to wash a pot afterwards.
I also use it to heat water in the morning for oatmeal. I own a kettle and could use that, but again, the microwave is easier/faster. And maybe this is weird, but I like to heat up apple juice and drink it warm and I wouldn't want to do that on the stove. 1min in the microwave in a mug does the trick great.
I lived for 4 years with neither conventional oven nor microwave. Just a toaster oven and stove.
In 1967 we saw the first generation of countertop microwave ovens.
By 1976 the number of homes that had a counter top microwave oven was larger that the number of homes that had a dishwasher.
My roommate almost exclusively uses a toaster oven... stove top to heat rice and stuff.. but everything else in there
