I run quite a bit around the oval in Richwood but not much in Delaware for some reason. You don't want to be in Delaware on Brown Jugs Day.

Dan Foran has all the DE records except the marathon, Dan Rincon has that record. That records is from 1975 2:20.

I think Vicki and Vick (coincidence?) are the only Olympians. I think, on casual training, Vicki is still the fastest in the state. I think she ran 16:45 in a road race this year.
Foran defitely lit up the roads after college. Mike D has been to nationals 3 of the last 4 years in the steeple. This year he only missed finals by one spot with an 8:35 I believe.
If we are talking high school, then I'd throw John Greenplate and Jim Brey into the mix.
Oh....and I've always said, Barry Pollock was definitely the best runner.....not the fastest....nor even the best 'at running'.....just simply "the best." ; )

Also note Richard Webb is also a fantastic age group runner.
on the female side i have to go with vicki huber, shes an amazing runner even after having two children, plus she gives a great calf massage. on the guys side i was not aware of one of the names that has been passed around but he seems to be a standout. Deeg is also up there as hes going for the state 5k record unfortunatly the beloved charter coach is only now a delaware resident, being born in glouster, ma. although vicki owns the 800 and 1600 meter records for highschool, the 1600 record has been in jepordy resently with anna brousell and will most likely fall this year. on the boys side brian sklodowski is blazing the trails winning the sophomore race at footlocker northeast. so for those who have been shouting out names from the mid 80's those names might be chaning in the next 10 years. as a side note is that vicki's DMR plaque up at the new applebees?
also to add on to my previous comment, if we are looking at the best runners to come through the state, alan webb ran at brandywine creek state park at the sallies invite a few years back, however the course record goes to another man, who actually won actually won the race in webbs senior year of high school when he skipped xc to work on the sub 4 mile
Eric Eckstrand (a Salesianum native) graduated from the Naval Academy in May of 2004. He ran 30:01 while at USNA, and he would have easily broken the 30 minute mark during his senior year if he hadn't been injured. Also an academic standout, Eric is currently getting his master's degree in computer science at Delaware before reporting to Nuclear Power School and starting his naval career.
Bruce Harris, Dover High School, Villanova University. 1:49 half in h.s. and 1:47 two weeks after graduation (1982 or 83, maybe?). Gotta mention him. Didn't do much post-h.s., but the times speak for themselves.
You are right. More people would rather go watch horses race than humans. Maybe if we let people bet on the races, more would watch.
Meb to place (2nd) at the olympics would have made you about a hundred bucks on a two dollar bet. The trifecta would have been worth a few thousand.
Come on people, have you lost your minds? The best ever would have to be Scott Purcell. This man is the obviously the man, the myth, and... the legend. All i gotta say is check the results in 2008 of the Olympic Trials 5k, then you will see.
the problem with UD is that (at least post 80s) the guys on team were much better drinkers then runners...particularly late 90s (Bockius, McNally, Dempsey, Palmer, etc) followed by the new crop (Innis, Catella, etc)...as for stories...many a sunday run has been interesting...
