If you're not making at least $10,000 a year off of your running you're a hobby jogger. The ego of top 5 at their local turkey trot runners is hilarious.

hobby joggers are easy to spot by the water bottles strapped to their hands.
Their commitment is usually very new, but they like to broadcast it to the world. Everyone in their family hears how they have "caught the running bug" and they get a slew of unnecessary running gadgets for Christmas.
Definition: a person who does a lot of jogging, and does such as his/her hobby.
Jogging is slow running. Slow is not as fast as me. So a hobby jogger is someone whose hobby is running slower than I run. Which means there are really not that many hobby joggers out there.

Speed work is done at a sub 10:00/mile pace.

A true runner will tell you their exact time to the hundredth of a second, verifiable on Athlinks or Milesplit.
I had a full athletic ride to a D1 school and I can't really tell you my 5,000 and 10,000 Prs to the second. I might be able to guess right, but I'm not totally sure. Also, none of them are on Athlinks or Milesplit. Maybe they are, but I didn't put them there. I have never set up a profile on any of these kinds of sites.
I am 37, though. So maybe these websites are more popular with the younger/newer runners.
I do know my marathon PR, but only down to the second. No hundredth of a second crap.
Anyway, I am definitely a hobby jogger now, but I can still break 16 in a 5k with no speedwork, so I feel okay about hobby jogging.

Easy. A hobby jogger bounces up and down at stoplights. A runner just stands there looking pissed.
THIS. One Million times THIS.

The term used to be fun runners.
Running a 10K at 5 min mile pace is not jogging. It's running. Jogging starts more in the 7-8 min mile range.
Just look at the #werunsocial hashtag on Instagram.

This is a good generalization, NISTy...7-8 min. pace is more toward jogging. For women and older runners, 8-9 min. would seem applicable.

So my twitter bio says "professional hobby jogger" and for the first time ever someone asked me what a hobby jogger was. I spent several minutes fumbling words around in an attempt to find the perfect description of a hobby jogger.
Help me out so I can be more prepared next time.
A hobby jogger is more about the casual attitude.
Hobby joggers
- focus on the fluff, i.e core work and XFit and run less.
- have no desire to understand the sport.
- believe everything they read.
- are heavily accessorized, fitbits, fuel-belts, hydration packs etc...
- social media takes the center stage in everything they do.
- are there for the post-race party.
- do color runs.
My 0.2c.
Anyone who doesn't make a living from their running.
Anyone who doesn't work in a shoe store

Lots of running gear during a 5-10k race: perfect picture of a hobby "ultrarunner" jogger.

Come on now, you know full well sub 16 is not in the jogging realm! Why can't people drop the BS?!

Is jogging about effort or speed? What is sprinting?
7 min pace is not jogging for 98% of runners.
I use to think little of 9:00 pace but in my late 50s it does not feel like jogging anymore.
Is 15 sec for 100m sprinting?
