Not in the class of these runners, but the marathon can really beat you up even if running 140 mpw. Toss in the heat and you have a recipe for a long day of slogging.
Some runners probably were having a rough day and knew that if they just "jog" the rest of the way home, they are going to increase the time needed to recover. For some that might mean missing a few pay day races.
If it is hot, your body makes the decision for you. No sense in putting your health at risk either.
The marathon is tough even under great conditions.
Better question is why finish if you're not in the top 3.
