What happened to Brian Sell?

Just scrolling through the results, I think it is cool the Hansons had 1/4 of the top 20 and 13 total on the starting line.

Brian Sell is continuing to be the ultimate badass. He's always been my personal running hero. His story goes to show what is possible with consistent hard work.

I don't think the dentists I know are making anywhere near that amount; perhaps they are not savvy. In fact, I don't think most MDs are making those kind of bucks.

He's in the Lancaster area, which has a number of biotech/pharma companies or satellite offices for such. And he still runs regularly with a couple guys. I get the sense that running is still an enjoyable hobby for him.

A run-of-the-mill MD makes around $175K. Sounds like a fortune until you realize that the average MD accrues $1 million in debt to get those two initials after their name. Medical Doctor? Nope. Mucho debt. Most docs I know drive junkier cars than I do, and work a lot longer hours with way more headaches than I do (Nurse). By comparison, registered nurses can go to school for 2 years, often with some sort of scholarship or aid, and make $70k starting out and easily top $100k after just a few years if they make management, or remain a staff nurse and work modest OT. As for Sell, he has a decent job compared to a lot of folks. If he likes what he's doing, it isn't all about the almighty dollar. Good for him.

Terribly sad to see Shay's name at the bottom of that list.

Google says average dentist salary in 2012 in the US was $149,310. Must be true.

About dental salaries, they vary greatly. An orthodontist, which is one of the highest-paid of dental specialities, ranking only under oral surgeons on average (and sometimes below endodontists) can earn between $300,000-400,000 if in a good market. Most GP dentists don't pull in that kind of monet though.

If a dentist owns his practice, he can of course also hire other dentists and depending on how he structures the practice can make a bundle. $500,000 isn't out of question, but probably a high estimate for even an orthodontist in a good market. The only docs making that type of money are normally surgeons, especially neuro and cardiothoracic ones.

I worked in dental-related research for four years and my dad is an associate dean of a major US dental school.

It is like saying a running store owner can make 1 million bucks. It is true if he happens to run like 100 stores:)

Very few orthos and dentists are clearing over 300k. Some do. But the majority never come close. Just because some plastic surgeon in beverly hills makes 1 million/year doesn't change the reality that most are making right around 350k.

I am guessing Brian Sell realized that going to school for 4 year at age 30 wasn't super attractive.

My dad is/was a dentist and just cleared 200k toward the end of his career, working his ass off the whole way. Hours are better than many doctors, but you're still pulling 50-60 unless you own a practice with guys under you. And to start a practice, you need to take out a large loan, so it's not gravy.

The idea that you just kind of leisurely stroll your way to riches in a profession paid on volume of procedures is silly.
