I didn't mean to get this tread so off topic. I completely agree with Yeah it is me. Tariku would arguably be the best American ever. If Galen Rupp is considered world class, which he is, Tariku is most certainly world class...even for Ethiopia. He won an Olympic medal!

My point was that some of the best distance runners of all-time (men and women) have been siblings and not twins with another world class runner. I realize that these weren't American examples, but it makes my point, nonetheless.

It is more likely for identical twins to both be highly successful than siblings, since their DNA is the SAME! However, siblings have very similar genetics, so if one is extremely talented at something, it's not unlikely that a sibling with have a propensity to have that same thing.

...and by "thing" I meant "talent".

I would absolutely believe that the propensity to cheat has a similar genetic component!

Thankfully, Bill Belechick only has one son!

Environment also matters. Having a twin to train with or push you from your first year of running is huge also.

Identical twins succeed because they're the only ones who aren't fed that stupid liberal notion of being a special snowflake.

I would guess that a sibling of an Olympic Trials runner has a higher than average chance of being a similar level runner/athlete. It's not surprising that identical twins would be more common than siblings as they have fewer genetic and environmental differences. However, when you look at various families, genetics are obviously very important for the general athletic ability of non-twin siblings as well. Even for identical twins, there can be physical development and environmental factors that influence potential. I'm a little over 3 inches shorter than my identical twin which had an influence in some athletic events.

Unless they are separated at birth, you can chalk that up to the fact that identical twins are nearly always best buddies who go through life doing the exact same things.

As opposed to thinking, for example, that two blond guys were born with the perfect genes to be experts on antique furniture.

Two of those ahead of him are arguably the 2 greatest distance runners of all time? I don't think that statement is correct. The two being referred to (Gebrselassie and Bekele) are INARGUABLY the 2 greatest distance runners of all time.

So 7:28, 12:52, 3rd in WXC, 1st in the indoor 3k, and 3rd in the olympic 10k isn't world class? I think what you want to say is one the is one of the top 5 distance runners of all time. The other is only in the top 100 or so.
