I just read an old article on Steve Holman. He was asked what he could run a mile right then, after 3 months of no running. He said maybe 4:20 & in 3 weeks 4:10. I think Bekele could run 4:15, which is his 10K pace. But to say he could just bust a 4:00 mile after 3 months of inactivity is a stretch. I remember when Aouita tried to make a comeback at 34 or 35. He was 10-15 lbs overweight & ran 4:00 flat indoors. He looked like hell & finished well back, then retired for good shortly after.
