I just read an old article on Steve Holman. He was asked what he could run a mile right then, after 3 months of no running. He said maybe 4:20 & in 3 weeks 4:10. I think Bekele could run 4:15, which is his 10K pace. But to say he could just bust a 4:00 mile after 3 months of inactivity is a stretch. I remember when Aouita tried to make a comeback at 34 or 35. He was 10-15 lbs overweight & ran 4:00 flat indoors. He looked like hell & finished well back, then retired for good shortly after.
I just came back from 4months sedentary (had glandular fever, so that is prehaps less than being sedentary?).... after 4weeks at 35-40km/week I can now run very close to 4:00 for 1500m.... Bekele would shit on that something chronic
Holy shit, people. Think about what you run a 5k in, maybe 5:00 per mile? If you didn't run for 3 months, do you honestly think you couldn't go out there and rip off ONE mile at your 5k pace? Kenny would EASILY break 4:00, haven't you ever been injured for a long time, not run a step, and had to come back?
You guys who think he couldn't break 4:15, can you seriously think that Bekele could EVER get so out of shape in 3 months that he would be burned by mediocre high schoolers?

This is actually an intereseting query as it relates to where one starts from before the onset of training. I knew more than a few lads who in high school (they were basketball guards) commenced their traning at 9-10 minute miles (skinny kids) and you'd have thought they ran a marathon after the first mile. Within several weeks most were busting off sub 6:30 with ease even without specific endurance training. They made radical improvements in a short time where as the Bekele's, Geb's, El G's are easily sub 5 milers in an untrained state. The thing is, for the elites to shave off a minute and change requires a hellavalot more effort than it does for the avg bloak who starts out at a plus ten minute mile to shave off four times that of what the elite hopes to accomplish. That's why the TALENT part of the equation matters ALOT if you care to ever be an elite runner.
ps, I imagine there has been a talented runner out there who runs poorly while untrained (labors to fire off a sub7 mile) who shows radical improvement over their initial effort.
How fast would a completely deceased Bekele fall from a jet plane cruising at 25,000ft? No drugs.
Terminal velocity for a typical skydiver is about 60 m/s, so I'd say it would take him a little over two minutes to fall from 25,000 ft.
I was a 4:30 miler in high school, and I did about 50 mpw. Now (4.5 years later), I'm twenty pounds heavier, and I've been running once a week. I went out to the track and ran 5:00. Just as a guess, I think Bekele could do 4:20 or so.
It doesn't matter how long hes out for he has so many cuminlative miles under his belt that he will always be in resonable shape and could be capable of running low or sub 4's but he'd have it easier in the longer races such as 10k he would still be able to rip off one in sub 28:30 how much faster than that would only be a guess.
