Truth is, these things are a f***ing urban menace. You're on sidewalk in downtown DC, and here comes a cluster of out-of-town tourists staring at the skyline as they whiz obliviously towards you. The wheels that carry the weight essentially double the footprint, the width, of a person. We've all run thousands of miles on sidewalks and had various encounters & evasions with zoned-out pedestrians. Seriously, Bolt could've been taken out for real due to an asinine contraption manufactured by a corporation that hopes to claim public space (sidewalks) as route to profit.

Regarding the Bolt incident though...many Chinese (including the TV reporter) seem to think of it as funny. Was it funny? Maybe just a fat guy on a segway crashing is funny, but how is the IAAF going to allow segways on the track after this? How was that not a safety concern? The dude was zooming in on Bolt's backend and got all affected and forgot he was a on a segway. The video I saw showed no reaction from him when his segway went up on the rail. He was way too otherwise engaged in filming Bolt's behind.
If Bolt had not turned away from the Segway at that moment it would have been much more serious. A bicycle hit from behind is less damaged than one hit from the side. Hope he is fine long term.

Not only do they present a safety hazard, they seem pretty pointless. What shot can you get from a segue that you couldn't get from your feet? In an era where a camera can take a clear picture from several miles away, I don't see why a photographer can't get his photo without entering the track.
