IME, 2 mile time for fit runners = (Mile pr x 2) + 25-40 secs.
Endurance based 5k/ 2 mile specialists athletes can approach the 25 sec conversion mark while speed based milers will probably be closer to the 40 sec conversion. Most will fall in the 30-35 second range.
If you want to break 10 for 2 mile, concentrate on breaking 4:45 for the mile first.
5:06 and 12:21. Ran a 2:09 800m that year fwiw.

curious, ran a 10:31 at the end of this season off of around 30 mpw, what kind of a mile time would that come out to for the average high schooler in that shape?
I ran a 4:58 in the 1600m, and a 10:24 in the 3200m in the same meet, 90 minutes apart.

depends. i ran 4:24 in high school and couldn't ever break 10 because my mileage was near 25 a week. also only ran the 2-mile once a season though...my group was 400m/800m based training so the mile wasn't even a focus when i ran it, it was for points.i am a classic example of "not aerobic based". in college i ran 4:17 but it was hard for me to run a 15:40 5k

I ran 4:59, then 11:00 about an hour later. I was pumped up for the 1600 (was desperately hoping to break 5) and was tired/did not want to run the 3200. My guess is around 10:45-10:50 had I run it fresh that day. I ran a road race 5k a week or so later and did something like 18:10 and I ran hard, so I wouldn't have been much under 11. No endurance when you're young.
4:30 = 9:30 only if you are 30.
I ran 4:49 and 10:42 in the same dual meet at age 16. I never ran faster - a couple of bad injuries made the next two seasons toast.
All we did was blast 400 repeats x 8-10, at 60-65 twice a week in the preseason, and run 3-4 miles easy on alternate days. Once meets started, we just did the 3-4 easy in practice and that was it. My lazy ass never ran on weekends - looking back that really wasn't bad on 20 + miles a week. 800 was 2:04 that season
My endurance sucked, needless to say. In fact, that whole season I never broke 11:00 for the 3200 except that one time when things came together.
Yep.Or, to find the pace for doubling a distance add 10-20 seconds to the pace per mile. The ten second range depending on the usual variables training, runner type...yadda yadda yaddaFor example: a runner who can do a 30:00 five miler, could figure on holding a 6:10-6:20 pace for ten miles...

When I ran 4:50, I ran a 10:21 3200. I didn't break 10 until I was a sub 4:40 miler.
5:00 = 10:51 (equivalent performance, if you're just as good at the 2-mile as the mile).
For the 9:30 question, equivalent is 4:23.
Thanks to all who provided feedback regarding my question on the 9:30 equivalent. Agreed that it's mid-4:20s or just better.
4:57 and 10:50 9th grade
I just broke 5:00 for the 1600 this spring (4:57), but I never got to race a 3200/2-mile race. However, due to knowing my 5k fitness at the time since I ran a 4-mile race, had a bad race and still ran 22:26 with a last 5k of 17:21, so I estimated that I had 17:00 capability on the roads, which would presumably mean even faster on the track.
OK, anyway, to make a long story short, at the time I broke 5:00, I estimated I was in 10:30-10:40 shape for the 3200, perhaps sub-10:30 on a perfect day having a perfect race.
