Scott Jurek illegal littering and drinking at Maine state park???

I know Scott casually, and he's an incredibly genuine guy, and one of the nicest people you could ever meet. Certainly, there is a certain amount of social-media promotion as part of his job, but that's not the driving motivation for he, or other ultra-runners (to generalize). The promotional aspect is just a necessity in order to get enough sponsorship money to put food on the table. Believe me, he's not getting $$$ money. Maybe $...

Oh, though Scott wouldn't fit the "hipster" label, perhaps ultra-running does attract more of that ilk (or at least fashion choice) than road running or triathlon. There are worse things than beards and skinny jeans.

Ultra-running does attract a great community of runners with a love of the intrinsic rewards of the trail, the run, and even of the competition. "Self-absorbed" doesn't really describe any of the ultra-runners that I know, or at least no more than it would for any of my road-running or triathlete friends.

I'm sure he was stoned too. Those ultra runners are ALWAYS stoned.

Worse than skateboarders that bunch. They really should be kept out of all National Parks just for all the garbage/butts/lighters/matches/P**P they drop behind. They like to portray themselves as granola/veggie/nature lovers but they should just run backwards on an airport "people mover" so they can keep their bong and toilet paper close.

Its only fair play if they are going to criticize Kilian Jornet for cutting switchbacks at the utah speedgoat race for 'environmental' reasons, they need to get off their high horse defending Jurek. To me its all ado about nothing both cases but if you're videotaped drinking and celebrating the next dudes who come through will do it and they're going to say well it was okay for Jurek why not me. He could have avoided this by saying a few words at the top and do the celebrating off the mountain.

I'm not a fan of Jurek. I have actually met him and he seemed really nice, but I am not a fan. I just don't really care about ultra running.

But for the park to accuse him of PR moves with a post that is 100% a PR move is just stupid. I kind of cringe at the fanboys who hiked up there to see him finish, but it was inevitable. Not Jurek's fault. There are like 30 people up there and one bottle of champagne. Not exactly "drinking" in the sense that he threw a kegger on the mountain after his finish.

I "get" that people want the wilderness to remain the wilderness and I agree with that sentiment, but this post is classless. Fine him (if he is at fault) and move on. Why the need to post pictures of him and say rude things? If Jurek loses a sponsor, he has a good shot at a libel case, to be honest.

We have a problem. We are obsessed with tearing others down. It has become a global phenomenon that has taken over Social Media. We are thirsty for blood and we want our next victim. Nevermind that he is a hippy-dippy vegan that lives in the woods and advocates for environmentalism, he will now be a corporate whore who is out to RUIN the state parks of MAINE!!! To hell with him! Pitchfork and torch, please! Let's get him!

Looks like thru hikers are the problem and Jurek just brought a little attention. Reading that letter it looks like a lot of thru hikers are douches. Jurek's actions don't even come close to the stuff they have in that letter.

Know what would be funny? Next time they shut the race course down before your slow a55 finishes and you are stuck out there on the road with your headphones and day glo kit looking all sad.
