As a guy who reads people for a living, he's not being honest in this interview once drugs are brought up. Does NOP not practice answering these types of questions???

First, there is plenty of evidence that elite athletes in certain sports acquire asthma (or more specifically, exercise-induced bronchoconstriction) as a consequence of repeated airway irritation during training. Winter athletes who train in indoor arenas (e.g. speedskaters) have some of the highest prevalence, presumably due to the terrible air quality (zamboni fumes). Cross-country skiers also have very high prevalence (higher than runners), because they do a lot of heavy breathing of cold, dry air. Runners also have elevated prevalence, and it would likely be worse for those who train in cold, dry areas -- like Utah, and particularly with very high mileage.

Second, the evidence that inhalers help athletic performance in those without asthma is very mixed at best. It definitely improves lung function, but lung function is very rarely a limiting factor for well-trained endurance athletes, except in certain specific conditions like running at altitude. Most studies end up with results like this:

Is there abuse of TUEs to get asthma meds? Undoubtedly. But it's also possible to REALLY have adult-onset EIB, and if you don't have it the meds are unlikely to have any benefits.

From what I ready on WebMD asthma is treated with anti-inflammatories and steroids. So would these guys have access to steroid inhalers to use at their discretion?

It's easy to just throw a comment like that out there, but it just doesn't make sense to ignore the larger epidemiological context. As a physician, I see many active people with adult onset asthma. It is common and some researchers regard it to be close to an epidemic. I don't think Salazar is a nice man, but if his actions are going to be brought into the light, it's not going to be done by creating a witch hunt atmosphere where claims such as yours are constantly thrown out. It is very likely that Levins suffers from the problem, and it is also highly doubtful that any medical intervention related to it helped him set a Canadian 10k record. Of course, this assumes he is being up front about there not being any other drugs involved, but there simply zero reason to mistrust Levins in my view. I think the case with Rupp is clearly different given eye witness evidence, but let's not tarnish other athletes who may well be clean and never have seen anything untoward.

Why was he out training in the middle of the night?
Geb was also affected seriously by his asthma when he tried to race in polluted cities. He said he didn't run the marathon in Beijing because of pollution.
Do you need a TUE for the kind of asthma medication Cam Levins take? I hope not because Sleazy said not long ago that none of his runners had TUEs.
Tell me why nobody from the 80's or 90's or going back earlier was on Asthma meds despite it being a common problem in society. We now have a situation where something like 75% of endurance competitors at 2012 Olympics had exemptions for Asthma meds.... it's ridiculous. If your Asthma was so bad it required steroid medication and it only occurred when you ran would you still run??

Not sure if Cam is telling the truth or not. It does seem like he didn't start taking the medication until he joined the group. However, with that said, I can't say I've experience any positive effects from asthma inhalers.
I got exercised-induced asthma at age 13 from running.
Then it wasn't much of an issue except for indoors when it was dusty and less natural air to breathe.
At 17, it flared back up.
I used an inhaler mostly during indoor track and only when I felt like I was wheezing during the warm up. With that said, I never PRed on those days.
My best running days would be days in the spring/summer when I didn't need an inhaler. I never had asthma again after age 17.
Anyway, point was, I'm not sure how much enhancement one can get from an inhaler.
Did you consider your lack of PR's on days when you had asthma flare ups might have been because you were having asthma flare ups? Your single anecdote doesn't disprove the possibility that inhalers can have performance enhancing effects on people with healthy lungs.

No one is denying that asthma is a joke. What's a joke is elite endurance athletes getting on meds for a condition that if they truly had they wouldn't be any near elite in the first place.
