So using your Google search to define beckoning it came up with this for the first result:
"make a gesture with the hand, arm, or head to encourage someone to come nearer or follow."
The Kenyan was already near him and the gesture encouraged him to LEAD not FOLLOW.
If Blankenship were clearly out in front and looked back and waived him to pursue him, that would be beckoning.
And I still don't understand how the motion caused the Kenyan to go out too fast.
I've had plenty of races in my life.
I have had someone hand gesture for me to lead and I gradually took over the lead without forcing an awkward pace.
The Kenyan ran stupid. In an open mile he'll be well ahead of that dirty mountain man wannabe.

Via the beckoning process.
There were much better options to use, such as provoke, spur, goad, incite, etc. Beckon is not a very accurate description of the interaction - it is more inviting/following in nature, as opposed to causing someone to go off and do their own thing.

Surprised no one has mentioned Ben gesturing to Centro to follow him in the USATF indoor mile.
Ben is the most expressive miler in history when you look at his in-race use of space and gesture. A master in the making of his craft.
Master of the art of stupidly encouraging his opponents. Centro beat him.
What he needs to do is gesture people to stay back and slow down. If he had made a "box" gesture at Centro he might have won.
