Still in her prime as a mid-distance runner but bet she could turn at least 2:25-2:30 with some marathon training and experience.

As a non-Scandinavian European runner, I would say that this a FANTASTIC decision by the race organisers. Given all of the reports of drug use in the East African distance running community, there is nothing wrong with discouraging East African runners from competing until a correct drug testing system is in place in their nations. This can been seen as simple deterrent to theft; has Rita Jeptoo given her prize money back to the Boston Marathon organizers?

As for inferior runners being given prize money by race organizers, this has been going on for a very long time - look at the prizes given to women and masters runners and look at where they classify in the overall race.

Why would it be illegal to only give money to the winner of one of the competitions helt during this race? It is three competitions in one: Stockholm marathon (open for all), Swedish national championship (open for all that compete for a club that is member of the national athletic federation), and new for this year the Nordic championship, in which only the runners of the national teams of Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland compete.

Point is, it is not the first Nordic runner of the Stockholm marathon who get's the money, but the winner of the official(!) Nordic championship, which is a competition within the same race. Of course it means in the end that only someone from one of the countries participating in this will be able to get something out of it financially, but it is not simply the first Swede/Norwegian/Fin/... . And what would happen if a Swede would win (maybe unlikely, but possible)? (Hypothetical) Prize money for all three competitions to the same person (don't think there is any for the Swedish championship btw)? Would that be fair?

That's also the difference to the Dutch thing, as far as I'm aware it was only based on Nationality in that one, and not part of any official championship within the race, right?

Newest info is btw that there will be some money for the winners of the marathon after all.

Actually a Scandinavian has won this race 8 of the past 9 years, 6 of the past 7 by Swedish-Kenyan Isabella Anderson of Sweden who ran 2:31 in 2010 on the Stockholm course and has a PR of 2:23.

Maybe at Wimbledon they'll decide only Brits can win and they';ll keep Djokovich, Nadal, Federer, the Williams sisters, Sharapova, and Wozniacki out

Yes and the logical solution is to have regular prize money and "local" only prize money.

This will bring the fast runners but also give the locals something to shoot for.

They can win money, maybe prolonging their career and still race against the best.
