Turned 30 started lifting weights and running less. Got up to 165lbs at same body fat. Got up to 250 bench, 300 squat, 350 deadlift at 165. Cut for a bodybuilding show. At 155 was still lifting same weight. At 150 I was getting delirious. On stage at an insanely shredded 146. Placed 5th in my class won a 4ft long broadsword.

Today I'm 37. 165-70lb on a good day. Maintain approx same strength. Run 18:00 5k and 5:00 mile on a good day. Want to deadlift 405 and run a sub 3 marathon in the same month...that would be cool.

I quit running in my mid 20s when I had maxed out my potential and made lifting my only form of exercise. While I am not "very muscular" (muscular potential is just genetically governed running potential), I am much more muscular than I used to be, and I consider it a MUCH better way of life than the running lifestyle. Think of it like this: running is an end in itself, something that consumes your time and energy with little or no outside reward unless you are one of a very small number of people who are capable of doing it professionally. Lifting weights is means to the end of increasing your quality of life outside of the gym, something that makes you look, feel, and function better when you work, date, and play.

heavy weights low reps will recruit more mm fibers without the size increase, but reps in the 8-12 range with around 85% max will increase the size of the fibers. Which is more body building style lifting.

You can still gain size doing any rep scheme provided the overall volume is high and you eat a ton.

5x5 has been used by generations of lifters to get big.

Biggest difference between lifting for strength and lifting for aesthetics is with lifting for strength you are focused on big lifts and big numbers and putting your body in a position to do that. Lifting for aesthetics you are focused on nuances in the muscle belly and will do more variations and more accessory work.

While each group will overlap some with rep schemes...powerlifters will spend most of their time in the 1-5 range and bodybuilders will spend most of their time in the 5-15 range....or even higher (25 rep leg extensions are a nightmare)

Alan - great posts. I don't run much anymore, but want to get bigger but not big, big. Just bigger and better looking.

Currently 5'11, and between 145 to 150 depending on the day, water, etc. I know nothing about lifting - any resources you could direct me to?

Used to be a 30 to 31 min 10k type guy. Now I run a couple times a week really slow. Want to try something new.

Starting strength by Mark Rippetoe...moreso because he actually teaches the lifts vs just giving you a program and saying good luck. Probably some youtube videos of him teaching too.

In a nutshell:

1. Do a total body routine three days a week.

2. Include: 1 lower body push, 1 lower body pull, 1 upper body horizontal push, 1 upper body horizontal pull, 1 vertical push, 1 vertical pull, 1 abs

Example:

Squat

Romanian Deadlift (aka semi-straight leg deadlift)

Bench

DB or BB row

Shoulder press

Pullup

Incline situp

Perform 3-4 sets of 10 w/ 45-60s rest.

Pick a light weight. Your first workout you will just try to find your 10rep max for each exercise. Once you do this on subsequent workouts your goal is to maintain # of reps. Once you can do 3 sets of 10 then increase by 5-10% next workout

Also include a light warmup set for each exercise.

Example using bench:

Workout 1:

95 x 10, 115 x 10, 135 x 10, 155 x 7 (10 rm is 135)

Workout 2;

95 x 10, 135 x 10, 135 x 9, 135 x 7

Skip ahead...could take any number of workouts, use as example. ..

Workout 4:

95 x 10, 135 x 10, 135 x 10, 135 x 10

Workout 5:

95 x 10, 145 x 10, 145 x 10, 145 x 6

Got it? Just simple progression.

Every 2-3 months change rep scheme from sets of 10 to sets of 5. After 6 mo change up exercise selection.

Since I'm a codger of 63 who's been running for 30+ years, I have to weigh-in here. Back when I wrestled in HS (155lbs., 5'6"), I lifted before it was really a go-to sport. I felt great in my teens and early 20s. In fact, the wrestling coach came after me - very flattering for a HS kid. Six days a week, 90 minutes per workout. Anyway, in my late 20s, after 1500 miles of the Appalachian Trail one summer, I came home at 132lbs., and discovered running. Since then, I've tried - diligently - to quit running; after thousands of miles, every so often, I'd commit to quitting - too time consuming, period. I went back to serious lifting, but it never lasted. Lifting doesn't give me the kick a run outside in inclement weather does. After coming back from miles in rain, heat, or snow - I'm good-to-go. Yeah, my back is stiff, my joints ache, and I'm slow - but, my head is in great shape. I guess the old 70s term applies: positive addiction. I still do, however, a whole body weight workout 2x per week - just cause I know old guys need it more than running, that's a fact; but, I'll always be a runner in body and mind. Still around 128lbs and 5'6", (...and my son tells me I'm one good cold away from death - he's a lifter.)

Why is this such a diffulcult concept for most people to grasp?

DISTANCE RUNNING PROHIBITS PROTEIN SYNTHESIS WITHIN MUSCLE FIBERS THUS CAUSING THEM TO BECOME WEAKER AND WEAKER AND WEAKER AND SMALLER.

It does this to be able to handle the stress..

How bout i come out with an event and its called.. Lets run 3,050 miles and see how fast we can do it in..

Of course you are going to gain muscle once you stop destroying your muscles by doing distance running..

Wow its really not that hard to understand..

Sprints are healthier than distance running.. Period..

There is nothing else that needs to ever be said about this..
