Robert, if I recall correctly your brother and you are from Texas. Any chance with your knowledge of Texas distance running, one of the Reina brothers ran quite fast at 16? Probably Rueben if I had to guess, but I know Randy and Roland were good runners back in the day. How about Jorge Torres? Now, I know they weren't "white" but American for sure. I was running during the time of John Holmes from Pasadena Dobie and no doubt he was one fast white American.

And he has improved by only 9 sec after that.

So don't get too excited about anyone running fast at age 16. It tells you little about what he will run in the next 10-15 years.

Do whites need to overcome some sort of hardship or prejudice to become distance runners?

Jackie Robinson being the first black baseball player is a big deal. He had to overcome so much to make it to that position.

Galen Rupp coming in 2nd at the olympics or Jenny Simpson winning the DL this year are not big deals. Neither of them had to enter through the back door or have racial slurs yelled at them while they compete.

More importantly, running is a sport. Nothing more. Running is a past time and we should be focusing on the positives of running: the power of perseverance in training, the beauty of someone laying it all on the line in in a race, the amazing science behind how the human body works and trying to maximize its output and the connections formed between training partners, competitors, coaches and fans.

Running, as with all sports and activities, is a pastime, something fun, an escape from the real world.

Drudging up race and bigotry by throwing around the term "american born" as if Meb isn't the most american of us all, making everything about competitions between races and ethnicities, disparaging foreign athletes competing in the NCAA and the list goes on only serve to sully the experience for the majority of letsrun.com readers and others that turn to athletics because it is their passion and don't want to bring the rest of the world's crap into it.

I figured either Virgin or Salazar. Not sure but if they had late summer birthdays they would have sneaked a time like this right before they turned 17 after their Junior track season.

I watched Ritzenhein run 14:13 right after his junior year but he turned 17 the previous December.

Alberto Salazar ran 13:45 for 3-miles when he was 16. That's equivalent to 14:16 for 5000 meters.

Everyone knows the answer to this one already. Verzbicas ran his 8:29 in 2011. Yes, it's a 2-mile and not a 3200m, but since his 2-mile HSR is faster than the 3200m HSR, it's obvious that he also has the faster 3200m by default.
