How talented? How much talent does he believe he has? Hasn't this already been established.

Well I don't know everything about him but he used to play soccer like 1½ years ago, and stopped since. So I guess he hasn't been doing any training besides gym probably, and the occasional soccer game with friends the last year.
He played soccer for school or some kind of league? If so, he has had plenty of training. I know many soccer teams that do better distance training that their own school's xc team. So if so, he isn't some freak natural talent.
Why do so many people not understand that soccer players can be very fit for distance running?
Yeah sorry about that, didn't really clarify. But do any of you guys have any ideas on where to go from here? What should his mileage be, and how many workouts per week?
A league on a very low level, like really low. We don't have school teams here like in the US. It's just I didn't really know there would be any 'residual fitness' 1½ years after stopping.

What makes this guy require special training that's different from basic common sense training?
Nothing at all besides the fact that he doesn't know a thing about running but he's interested. I am what you would call a hobby jogger so I'm not to much use here :P
Arturo Barrios ran 17 min 5k in gym class with no training. So with very high level of training, Maybe sub 16. Thus, some talent but nothing special.
Having a high baseline level of fitness is one type of talent.
Being a high responder to aerobic training is another type of talent.
David Epstein discusses this in his book.

Exactly. He just needs to get out and run regularly and try to avoid injury. Once he has a bit of work under his belt he could add some strides, a few hills etc to push him along. I have seen guys like this progress to sub 15 but others struggle to get down into the 16s.
Anyone heard of abdi nageeye? 25 year old Somali born runner who runs for the Netherlands. Runs 13:38 for 5000m and 28:21 for 10 000m ( he's run 28:04 on road).
At the age of 17, a friend took him to an open cross country 5k race. Abdi ran 17:35. He had no prior training whatsoever. THIS is talent.
Personally I think 19 minutes without training doesn't make you the next top top track star, but it indicates a good amount of potential.
Only on LetsRun do people talk about their 14:XX 5K time, and then whine about how that really sucks.
Maybe if you're a Kenyan, otherwise stfu.
Thank you.
