Some fatboy coworker just buried me in the office charity 5k. WTF?

I know a lot of runners who put on a few pounds and can still roll some pretty fast times. You can be big and still be fit.

I also suspect that the guy might not be 220 lbs. Runners, particularly young ones, tend to be poor at estimating body weight.

Either way, the guy talking about office politics was right on. You should do it. Put your ego aside. If race results are that important to your ego, you're in for a life of misery anyways.

I'm sure a lot of you read the front page article on Bob Kennedy this week. How you'd have liked to have shown up for the office 5k before he started getting back in shape and he's there. I bet anything he could have still dropped down a 17:30 off talent alone, even at 190+ lbs.

In my 30s i ran in the 18:30s, 5'11" and around 210 so it certainly can be done. I didn't have a "gut" but I didn't have a 6 pack either.

I trained as hard as my body type and work schedule allowed, and if the OP tried the same he wouldn't get buried. Either that or he needs to stop worrying and lose a few hangups. Just because someone looks like a runner doesn't mean they are fast, and the converse is also true.

I weigh 175 but have pretty good speed in a kick. One of my race goals is to never get overtaken in the last mile. I only run 1:25 for half marathon but every race some guy (or gal lol) tries to drop me in the last 1-2 miles. I stick and then they try to get in a kick with me over the last 400 thinking a big guy like me will be easy prey. Every time I put 30 meters on them in the last 200. You can be big and still have closing speed if you are naturally fast and kind of like the pain. After all, Bolt prob weighs 170. Unless you have raced a guy before it's impossible to assess their kick. If you are not a big kicker yourself, you need a big gap just in case.

Saying you want to run a marathon in the spring says all I need to know. You're a hobby jogger and not fast and you know nothing about actual training.

I agree w/ this. No one is going to think you're foolish for sprinting at the end of a 5k, no matter what time you're running. Anyone who does is an egotistical jerk.

This is especially true if there is a good race about to happen. I'll be the first to tell you it's awesome to watch two guys gutting it out to the finish line, even if they're 18+ in the 5k.

Sucks to be you. That is what happens when you believe that being a d3 athlete means something. Anyone can compete at that level....it isn't a good place to brag about.

Have you ever thought about competitive bodybuilding or powerlifting? Endomorphs like you (build muscle easily and have a large frame but can't burn fat well) would do pretty well.

It's not as if once your running career is done, there is nowhere else to rekindle your competitiveness.
