Abbey D'agostino a 16:48 in pro debut at 2014 Mayor's Cup?

It goes deeper than this. She lost NCAAs to two people nobody expected her to. Then she did not race the rest of the summer. Now this. She was the class of that field.

My point is that something is wrong. She is not on the path that she had been on the last two yrs (up until NCAA 5k). I hope I am wrong, but I think that she is not going to be the 14:50 runner we assumed she was on track for.

All things considered, this was not a bad race, but it was by no means good either. Your typical NCAA all-American could have produced the same results, but I am going to assume Abbey is on a pro schedule, which means she is still in a build up phase.

I am a fan, but I have to agree - she has lost momentum and often getting it back is very difficult.

I'm not saying she is done,but if she doesn't prove to be competitive this winter...that would be very troubling and probably make it >50% that she is done.

You guys are incredibly short sighted. It was a bad race, but not a meaningful one -- not one she would've targeted. At least give her a year before deciding she's done.

one race isn't the point - the point is that to my knowledge she hasn't improved or even looked particularly racy for a long time.

You look at this list and tell me there is nothing to worry about. I get it that she was overraced and beat up in the spring and took the summer off, but still - this sport is highly, highly momentum based - forward momentum is hard to restart once lost:

Why are you saying repeat? Did you mention this before? The world medal is irrelevant. The point I'm was making is regards to PR and time ability. What is Jen's 5000 PR? Lagat has maintained his ability to 40.

What exactly are you finding concerning there? Conference and prelim times should obviously be ignored. The only concerning thing is that she lost NCAAs.

she hasn't run a near-PR race since february - at millrose and boston she ran a 4:28 mile and something like a 8:51 3k.

After that...not a whole lot timewise, which would be ok, but she lost NCAAs in track.

look, I'm just saying that she has not been super impressive since Jan/Feb 2014. Which is a long time when you are 22.

So I'm really hoping she has a good indoor season. If she doesn't, the odds are against her ever being a world class type runner.

well, she's only been near world class since 2012 when she almost made the olympic team. So she was on a great streak in 2012, 2013 and the winter of 2014. Then...a great blah and some races she shouldn't have lost.

So out of her 3 year period since she became elite...10 of those months have been fallow ground.

...the point is that if, say, Huddle had a blah 10 month period like the one AD is trying to end, I wouldn't care much since Huddle has been world class for many years and has come back strong before.

But AD hasn't proven herself to be resilient - I'm really hoping she does, but hasn't happened yet. So I'm concerned, in a mild way.

You shouldn't have to explain. This is Track 101.

The runner in question was 3rd, 2nd, 1st in NCAA XC.

In indoor track she won 4 titles over junior and senior yrs.

In track she ran 3rd, 1st, 1st, 3rd in the 5000m.

Anyone know who has put up a more impressive collegiate career in XC, indoor and outdoor?

So, YES, when you win 7 NCAA titles in 8 consecutive races, but lose the last one, the one you were most favored to win, and then you don't race for 5 months and the first one back is a distinct dud. YEAH, it is cause for concern.

Nobody said she was "done", not me, not "agip", not anyone. We just said this is not characteristic for her or any athlete on the ascend.

She finished top-3 at NCAA XC the last 3 seasons, did she start any of those seasons by placing 4th and losing to runners she has beaten before (like Bottorff and Rhines)?

NO, she didn't, so YEAH, it is cause for concern if you are fan of American distance running.

Also, read the article on the homepage. She's not crowing about how great the transition is going.

I'm an Abbey D' fan, but her 5K PB is about 2 years old so she may be one of those runners who peak in College, on the other hand Jordan Hasay's transition into the pros wasn't that smooth either, but she continues to improve. I think she would have been better off joining Mary Cain and Hasay at NOP or at least getting a new coach.
