Lonely wife marathoner recounts how she used rage, sexual frustration, cigarettes, and wine to train for her first marat

The article starts off with this gem:

"Let me tell you how I trained for the last one: I didn’t. Instead, I ran on rage and sexual frustration."

Then a big chunk of it is about the training she did leading up to the race.

The NYT is caught printing a quotation critical about communism having too many rules? That's the real story. What will their comrades have to say about that?

Speaking of women running marathons, how is Shalane so good looking just after running a marathon. Damn she is hot!

Prague in 2004 is way after the Velvet Revolution. It's not a communist state. But one virtue of not making the full capitalist transition yet is that making money wasn't the be-all and end-all of existence, to the point where you turn every cheap or free activity, like running on the roads, into a very expensive proposition only for the affluent (e.g. way over $200 for a marathon in New York). $1.30 for that marathon. That is sweet, only about the cost of five or ten dirt-cheap pastries in Prague back in 1997. As for the article, it is echt NY Times running. They feature that article of the self-important wife angry at her war correspondent husband while he is in very significant danger in Iraq, while she is forced to actually take care of her children, probably some of the time when the very cheap maids aren't there. She spends a lot of time in cafes. She barely trains.

Meanwhile, when the first sub 2:03 marathon is run in Berlin, the Times buries the story on the back of the sports pages (the Ryder Cup debacle is on the front page, along with Jeter) and the headline doesn't even use Kimetto's name but says "Kenyan." So, the very paper that gets major click bait every week from articles about running pseudo-science and the occasional 4:45 runner buries the greatest achievements in the sport. (and for the American angle, note that Rupp's silver medal was barely mentioned, even though it broke a long drought).

A shitty ryder cup and Jeter doing anything is more newsworthy than a world record marathon...and the NY Times knows it.

I guess these human interest stories are good for promoting interest in running.

Unfortunately, this is yet another example of running for the wrong reasons. Yes, you can run a marathon on "rage" if you train for a few months. Not sure you can enjoy it or run it fast enough to win money. If you don't have fun or get some other reward such as money, it's hard to see what the point really is.

I think most people would be happier running a 10k than falling apart in a miserable marathon because they did not really want to put in the training that is needed to prepare. I'm not blaming the runners so much as the endless series of training plans that max out at one 18-20 mile run and 40 mpw.

so she is a stay at home mom and her husband works and you think he can refuse an assignment for work and keep his job?? what choice do you think he has?

either

A) he reject assignment and loses job or promotion ability leading to her to complain and divorce him

B) he goes and she complains

no win situation for the guy

by the way this woman is classic diva: she actually believes the scary comment is a compliment from the reporters .... it wasn't

I love how women like her claim she is "single parenting" that is bull, she ain't working and paying the bills her husband is, and he is a parent whether he is changing diapers etc. or not. My $ says this witch has a nanny, a maid, daycare and in-laws that all help out. What a B
