Alan Webb 2:23 ! 1000m time trial

I was at the race and neither Webb nor Smith looked all that tired. I also noticed that Webb didn't really pick it up at the end of the race so maybe he didn't want to go all out. Webb's splits were 29, 57, 1:2?, 1:54, 2:23. It looked like he wasn't running very hard and that was good if it was his first race in a while. He did a lot of drills and strides before the race and also did several exercises afterwards.

i know everyone's sick of hearing about webb, but can we still rip on D2 coach for being a negative, defeatist jerk?

This is not the kind of time you would report. You should report time that show athlete is ready to break own record. Never report slower time than what he run in high school. Silly nutheads.

my question- this guy is keeping his racing schedule pretty secretive. sounds like ratzcko is all smoke and mirrors. the kid has run fast but its a little early for that kind of gamesmanship. if im promoting a race and know this kid will sell tickets, im not keeping anything secret. thats what appearance fees and bonuses are for. if he's worried about pressure, then why make a big deal about quitting school and signing a big money contract. if you cant stand the heat, keep out of the kitchen.

I'd be willing to bet you on that statement. Not sure he will ever get under 3:50 or become world class, but I'm sure enough he will best 3:53 that I'd bet cold hard cash. I've got a one dollar bill that's burning a hole in my pocket.

Prediction:

Webb will run 3:51 or the 1500 equivalent by summer's end.

I guess it was called a time trial because it was only him and a training partner/friend on the track. Also, that other person stepped off the track after leading Webb through 600m at a set pace. Sounds every bit like a time trial to me. It was not a competition because they were the only ones on the track. It happened before/at/around a high school meet. Probably done on purpose to showcase Nike's biggest link to the high school market in their stable. You guys really do overanalyze everything. Who really cares?

Only on Let's Run does everyone seem to find fault with our up and comers. Gee, Webb didn't set a WR in December! A-Webb didn't peak for this? What's Raczko thinking?!

I can hardly wait for the "Jorge Torres sucks!" smack when he doesn't open his college season with a sub 13:00 5K. How about some "Hanson's have failed to produce!" talk when none of their stable wins a WC medal this coming summer? You know, I think I'll begin a "Ritz is overrated!" thread when he fails to post a 26:20 10K this season. Broe and Krum? I haven't seen their names in the paper lately so, I can safely assume they are done.

Some of you have the patience of a badger on crank and the critical thinking skills of a kindergarden student. Do yourself a favor, unless you are Alan Webb, Scott Raczko, or Ray Flynn, don't presume that you understand the first thing about Webb's training or Raczko's plan.

I totally agree. When I read the initial post, I thought it was a pretty dang good run. How many of us in practice run almost 2/3rds of our goal race in PR pace in practice? And when we do, is this bad?

I would think it would be interesting to read the logs (and know PRs) of those who are picking apart Webb's training. Maybe we could find some things in which to give a few pointers on.

Yeah, injury free, Webb will probably run at least a 3:51 mile this season. The 1k time trial is not a bad run for a guy who has obviously been doing little speed training. I suspect he won't do much speed training the entire indoor season, and all the anti-Webb crowd will crow loudly if he doesn't run an indoor 3:35 or 3:52. Most of the negative comments regarding Webb are from jagoffs that will never run a 4:33 mile, never mind 3:53. It's pure jealousy.

All I know is that when I left my apartment this morning at 5:20 am for a snowy 12 miler, I thought about Webb's race and dreamed. Power to the man, I hope he has a fantastic season.

That was a good run, especially for no speedwork. In addition, considering that last year at U-M, he ran only 1:50-1:51 outdoors (with speedwork), he is already looking to be on his way towards improvement.

In addition, I have this to say: Webb has always been well-spoken and has never had anything bad to say about anything, even when he left U-M. He works hard and represents T&F well. I say he is a class act.

Did anyone see what spikes he was wearing in this Time Trial? I heard they were not the zm bob's. If anyone has a picture, i would love to see it.
