I have an athlete that does considerably better consistently in every workout, but seems to always do more poorly than his teammates in every race. Right now I suspect he is doing poorly under the pressure of the race. However I'd like to learn how to train him in order to make him do just as well as he is doing in practice. Does anyone have any tips?
Seen it 100 times. Here are some of the common factors:
1. kid is trying too hard to beat teammates and does not have same fire against people he does not know.
2. Kid just wants to be on varsity, so he pushes himself against his team.
3. Kid is trying too hard in practice and is unwilling to sacrifice practice ego for meet ego.
4. Kid does not know that a hard workout may affect his race results. This one is the fault of poor coaching.
