According to the ESPN article on hit cut:
"Sam had the seventh-best selling jersey on NFLShop.com, the league's official store, from April 1 through July 31."
hundreds of other guys got cut. This isn't news, or at least it shouldn't be.

That's not true. Do you understand how football works? The Rams have very good defensive ends and are very deep at the position - that's why Sam was cut.
Let me use an analogy. Let's say you are only allowed to keep 53 players for a college track team. You already have 8 sub-13:10 guys. Sam's stats from the pres-season which were VERY GOOD - indicate he's quite promising - a 13:10 guy. But you are judged as a coach by how you stack up in head to head dual meets with other teams.
You clearly have no use for a 9th 13:10 guy so you cut him. Why? because 13:10 doesn't do anything for the Rams. They need a long jumper/triple jumper (another position in football).
To be honest, it reminds me how we dominated track and field at Cornell. Every Ivy team had 20 9:15 2 milers. Their track teams would be a lot better off instead of getting the 20th 9:20 guy, they'd get a jumper or thrower now and then.
Well, he is a below average NFL player. But he did lead the NFL in sacks in the preseason (sacks in his mouth) hahahaha jk.

Yeah I guess they need more sprinter type athletes in american football, that's why a team apparantly signed a national champion hurdler. But what's this nonsense about triplejumpers needed at an american football team?

Well, we'll see if this is true soon enuff. If he is picked up by and makes another team then what you say has credibility. If not, then I think we can conclude it does not.

Well, he did have a chance of making the team. An undrafted free agent defensive lineman named Ethan Westbrooks actually beat him out for the final D line spot. Fisher said that Sam had done well, but Westbrooks out competed him and has the advantage that he can play tackle and end, whereas Sam's primary role is as a rushing end. Point is taken though that they didn't have a great need for a D lineman. I've noticed that sometimes in the late rounds teams will draft a local guy, so that may have had something to do with it. Most 7th rounders don't stick, so it probably didn't mean a hell of a lot to them whether it was a D lineman or a QB.

Free agent signings or more about signing local college heroes. Very few of these guys stick on the roster, but occasionally one makes a team. The theory was that exhibition games were terrible sellers for the fans so if a team signed a local hero more fans would come to the game to see Gordie Can't Play for Crap play a few minutes in the game.
