Was the offside called on Argentina yesterday actually offside? I have to admit, the call always seems somewhat subjective until it's obvious. It seemed to me that the Netherlands defender was right with the streaking Argentinian when the ball was kicked. Wasn't that ok?
It seems like offside could go away when the ball is controlled inside of some mythical distance from the end line. I believe there is offside on corner kicks, is there not? That seems ridiculous.
There is no offside violation even if the first player touching a ball after a corner kick is in an offside position. Similarly, there is no violation for the first player touching the ball on a throw-in. Also no offside in your team's side of midfield.
Thanks. There was a call on a corner in one of the games that I assumed was offside. Not sure what it actually was. Did you see the call in the game yesterday? It did not appear to me to be offside, but no one seemed to argue much.
They should think about getting rid of offsides in American football.

Why is it we need more goals again? It's only Americans that complain that there isn't enough scoring. The rest of the world seems pretty ok with how many goals are scored.
Get rid of gloves in baseball, they totally ruin the game.

Eliminate the goalie! Scoring would would be high, which would make the game more exciting.
Personally I like the hockey rule. Once the puck (in this case ball) enters the zone you can enter. This is why corners are so exciting.

That's because everyone is behind the ball when it's played....so there's no such thing as "being in an offisides position" if you're the first one to touch the ball.
"offsides position" is in front of the ball and behind the last defender when it's played.
Throw ins, though, as you say, would be considered an exception I suppose.

Not true, but the effect is minor. The corner arc has a radius of one meter, and the ball can be placed anywhere in the arc, including with most of the ball outside the arc and only a small portion of it over the line. A player within one meter of the end line could be in an offside position.

Several points, then an answer.
One. Yesterday was not "arguably the most boring semifinal in world cup history". come on. The world cup's been happening for 70+ years. The teams were tactically sound and there was a lot of good football. Not crazy exciting, but 0-0 doesn't automatically make a game boring.
The notion of a game being allowed to extend beyond 120' is silly because even after 105 minutes the players start to fatigue so much that the quality of the game decreases drastically. Yes, it could force a team's hand and the "strongest" may win, but they would be winning by their stamina not their soccer prowess.
Elimination of the offsides rule would increase scoring. Defenders would sit deeper, but that would not compensate for the volume of unanswered chances taht currently occur but are voided because of offsides. it would dramatically change the dynamic of the game, however, and reduce the quality becasue it would be more burte force and cherry picking and less creativity to penetrate the back line.

The marking on defense was incredible. With Brazil, I was dumfounded how guys could just be left wide open. Yesterday, I was amazed at how each team could just keep possession. Every two minutes, I'd say to myself, "If that was a US defender, he'd have booted the ball away and we'd have lost possession."
I do hate the lottery of PKs. There were quite a few socring chances in the last 40 minutes of the games as people got tired. It would be amazing if the players just got in the middle and announced, "We're gong to keep playing."

did you find Germany's game to be scoring hindered by the offside rule?
why not just widen the goals, would that make you happy?
Instead of penalty kicks, how about continuing play after after 120 minutes, but removing a player from each side every 2 minutes. The game would certainly open up in a 5v5 match.

Did you not watch the Brazil- Germany game to see how a match goes with lots of goals. You might as well not have bothered watching after 30 mins as the match was over
Football like all sport is about supporting one team not idly watching, that's why the world xc folded - nobody to support for USA or Europeans
The match was dull last night but not to Dutch or Argentiniian supporters they know there team is still right in it. The results could have gone either way

The real problem at the moment is the lack of quality in forward players compared to strikers. The focus is too much on passing with too few player capable of dribbling past even one player
As probably the best soccer player (back in the day) on these boards, there is one change that i think you could make that would:
A) increase scoring and exciting moments in the game
B) reward teams who are able to maintain possession in the other teams 1/3
C) Encourage teams to get out and attack instead of parking the bus in front of their goal
All of these are legitimate complaints of the game.
The answer is to minimally increase the size of the goal.
