Me too. In 5k road races my best is 16:40. But I've time trialed a 12:47.
Most of these footballers would come through the 800m in the 2:15 to 2:20 range, and then completely be gassed. They don't have the speed endurance for the next two laps.

But did you do it with a dislocated hip and a detached hamstring like Alex did?

The stats guy said that against Belgium, Bradley had 65 hard sprints in his 10-12 miles (in 2 hrs). That is pretty much what we thought. A lot of the mileage was in jogs. The 65 sprints were all well under 100y in length, putting them at maybe a maximum of 3-4k. So, a pretty good workout but with plenty of jogging or walking rest. I'm going to estimate maybe 8-10 minutes of hard running in the 120 minute game.

3500m/65 would be 53.8m or roughly 59 yards. 59 yards is pretty far.
Translation: 65 sprints of 30 yards. And by 65 he probably had 35. Exaggeration, thy name is the human race.
A high school teammate of mine ended up getting recruited for a Division I soccer team. He was a starting midfielder (like Bradley). He was also on the track team and ran primarily the 800 in around 2:17. Not too fast! He was extremely talented with his touch with the ball. That is why these guys are pros - because of what they can do with the rock. Not because they can run sub 4 for the mile. You are really discrediting the best track athletes in the world when you make these stupid assumptions.
I know the above is anecdotal with a test subject of 1, so here is another observation I made from watching The World Cup (love it by the way!). The striker for the U.S. that hurt his hamstring was seen getting ready during practice. He was jogging 15 minute pace. Soccer players jog and sprint. They don't cover a long distance as fast as possible.
Hey, guys, come on, if LeBron James can run 44 for the 400 you would have to imagine these guys would be good for what, low 3:50s?
You often hear about fast kids giving up soccer for track. Is it possible to not be that great at track but to still be fast on the soccer field? Like to have a fast acceleration for 30m but not be that great in a race of 100m or more?
Most elite soccer players have a VO2 max in the low 60s.

That probably doesn't equate with a 4:10 mile for the majority. Then again, soccer players train for intermittent explosive efforts, so it's possible a number of them could become good milers with specific mid-distance training.
4:30? Most of the refs could run a 4:30 for goodness sake. The runners for whom a 4:30 takes serious training and dedication are not athletic enough to play soccer at a high level. (My PR is 4:36. I freely admit that I am not athletic enough to play soccer at a high level.)About a quarter of the varsity soccer players on my *high school* team, which was not very good, probably could have beat me after a single season of track training. Our track team stole 3 benchwarmers from the soccer team my senior year. The slowest of the three ran about 4:45. The fastest ran under 4:20. They weren't World Cup caliber players, they were 3 benchwarmers on a bad high school team.

At my d3 school they have a 2 mile time trial at the beginning of the season and the fastest guys frequently run 11:20 sometimes 10:50. These guys are moderately athletic and clearly would be better at the mile than the 2 mile. I think its incredibly reasonable to think most world class soccer players could run 4:30 at the very least, 4:10 is probably pushing it though. I doubt any of them can run 4:10 without training. 4:10 and 4:30 is a world of difference.

With all due respect.... running a sub 4:30 mile takes specific "track" training, fast natural leg speed, and a solid aerobic base for all but the most extremely talented. Most of these soccer guys need to keep substantial amounts of "fast-twitch" with adaptation for quick, deceptive, often side-to side movement, in many ways this compromises the strength-based training approach to mile running that most distance runners have. These soccer guys can't afford to completely deplete their legs in an extended base phase to build up their aerobic capacity like a distance runner can.
Klinsmen does emphasize running/sprinting mechanics and drills very heavily. He seems to also believe he emphasizes endurance training, but I don't think people in the pro soccer world have as good a grasp of aerobic development as they believe.
Given the training, I bet there are a few guys who could run sup 49 400m, a few who could run in the 1:55-1:58 range for 800m, and maybe(unlikely) one or two that can run 4:20's. I'd say the vast majority of them can run sub-5:00 in the 1600m, and sub 2:05 in the 800m, and sub-53 in the 400m.
Having played soccer at fairly high competitive level from age 15 to 20 I can tell you that it doesn't transfer to distance running very well. You train a lot of sprint intervals and spend time in the weight room. You also do some 5K and 10K runs especially in early-season build-up but those are the workouts everybody dreads, which is kinda funny now that I look back on it. We'd puke after doing intervals and get banged up training corner kicks, but 5K on the beach was somehow worse. Makes you appreciate why decathletes hate the 1500.
I wish I could remember my Cooper test results. They were pretty pathetic by runner standards (I think around 5:15/mi. pace) but I was consistently the best runner in our soccer team.

I don't know. There's a reason why distance runners are benchwarmers on a soccer team. Soccer players these days are pretty burly guys. Not like American football, but they're built. They don't have a typical distance runner build. More like stocky with big quads and glutes. I might be wrong though.

Buy everybody ran a mile in 4:30 in HS. So me is slow. Durr. I bet lebron could run a mile in 4:30 because he's a PRO athlete. I like the look in his eyes, that intensity he has. He would will himself to that 46 second 400m or 4:30 mile.
But the referees in hockey are even more athletic and especially clutch due to their contact with PRO ahletes. They could do 4:20 I gather.
