Alexa's got a lot of promise, but there is not now nor was there prior to this race really a question of her capabilities vs Cain. All the negativity about Cain ducking, etc. is just Nike/NOP/AlSal hate directed at Cain (and probably a bit a jealousy and fickleness by folks wanting the next upcoming HS phenom).

DAG drops out of the 5000 and no one on LRC claims she's ducking, can't cut it, is afraid of losing, etc.. In fact, there was generally supportive and understanding posts for her (as there should be).

Hasay, another NOP athlete, is pilloried non-stop on this mb.

Would be nice to see support for all three of these fine athletes.

I for one was very impressed by the gutsy race Efraimson ran. Sure, she faded in the last 250m, but up till that point ran every bit like she belonged in that race. She positioned herself well throughout, keyed well off of Cain, but simply found herself spent with 250m left and had nothing much more to give.

To me, it further showed her maturity and toughness that while she faded from 4th on the backstretch to 7th place by midway around the final curve, she slid no further place-wise and held that all the way to the finish.

It looked to me like what happened was not simply that she "faded" as everyone is saying. She thoroughly *believes* in herself and hoped or thought she could finish top 3 or 4, but it turned out she simply ran beyond what she was capable of at this time. Yes, she hit the wall and paid for it, but that just shows what kind of fearlessness she has. And it didn't look like stupid fearlessness but more calculated see just where her limits turned out to be. Has to be a great learning experience. Not to mention satisfying to see her totally put herself out there like that. Very ballsy (pardon my French), if you ask me.

LRC race report said an official had to help her through the mixed zone without stopping to give an interview as she was struggling to walk. Not hard to see why.

When you consider that runners have to go through rounds to get to the finals, the difference between Cain and Efraimsom is even greater - Alexa working hard in a preliminary and Mary doing just enough to get to the next round.

You fo got the 3,000 in Washington where she ran an amazing 9:00 but faded to 4th however 4 or 5 seconds behind the winner. I'm not a huge fan of Mary Cain, I just like what she does, but that's one of the differences between Cain and Efraimson. It's that Efraimson gets dragged along to fast times, whereas Cain can atually compete when she's at her best or near her best. Efraimson cannot do that yet, as evident in the 4 pro races she has been in.

She did run too many races, but you can't compare the two performances. With different tactics in different races, you'll have trouble accurately predicting based on "recent bests times". Just look at Jenny Simpson... she wasn't going to run a 3:58 in that particular race.

It's true that she hasn't run a lot of pro races, but she hasn't fit in as well as if she waited longer before "going pro". In a year perhaps she should think about it. Going from "really big fish / biggest fish (if you exclude Mary Cain)" to "small fish" is a really tough transition that ruins a lot of runners. She should wait.

It is a work of art how a HS girl, who is demolishing times run by other HS phenoms for decades, is being horsewhipped by posters using another phenom, who is not just mega-, but freakishly talented. No I didn't. That was an invitational that was open to unattached or club runners and had fields consisting overwhelmingly of collegiate runners. Professional races include athletes who are either beyond their college years (or never had them) or are so exceptional that they can gain entry anyway. How many pro races have you known that have guys running in the 4:20s for the mile?

This is so ignorant as to defy description. The girl has been running against pro competition only since February and sporadically at that. Cain turned pro before her high-school career was even half over and has run a large number of pro races, not just three or four. Exactly, Cain's 2013 indoor season was the 1st full season she even worked w/ Salazar and she was already outkicking and finished over top pro's, did anyone not see her beat Moser and Erdmann at Washington for her 3k debut? Did anyone see her get 2nd at the NB Games behind none other than Sarah Bowman to run 4:32? Did anyone see her in the Millrose mile when she got 2nd behind Nicole Sifuentes (world champ qualifier) and ran 4:28? Did anyone see her when she almost won Oxy behind Katie Mackey to run 4:04 and get the A standard for Worlds? Did anyone see her go through the 300 at 46 seconds at the PRE 800m and no one thought she would break 2 at that point, and then she outsprinted half the field in the final 150m to become the only American HSer to break 2 in 1:59.51? Did anyone see her jog the Portland Track Festival 5k just to get the USA A standard and still break the HS National record? Did anyone see her jet pass all the pro's in the final lap of USA's to only get clipped by Moser (who ran 4:02 earlier) and qualify for Worlds? Did anyone see her use her smart tactics to make sure she was in the position to make the world final where the 12 best girls in the world at 1500m competed? Cause I saw all those things, and that was from her JR year, and Alexa is a phenominal athlete, but she's hasn't accomplished any of this... Give her time, yes, but don't say she's on the same level right now...
