Another question is, why is your open 400 so much worse than your relay?

I will guess his relay split was timed by one of his relatives...
But even the 52 is way better than his 800. He should be running 400 at state if anything.
Unless it's one of those state meets where 15 guys go sub 50 and only 5 go sub 2.
You can break 2. Go out in 58 and concentrate on picking up the pace at 400m, 500m, 600m, and then down the stretch. Without consciously trying to go faster you will slow down on the second lap and you may end up a little over 2 minutes. Your 400 sped is fine, as is your endurance. Look at the 800m as a long sprint and stretch out your stride.

Work the backstretch on the 2nd lap! Honestly, take the lead on the backstretch and hang on for dear life.
I agree with this. Go out in 57 and make a move with 300 to go. You'll still have enough left to finish strong.
I'm scarred for life that I ran 1:57 and didn't make it out of my district (District to Regional to State).
Good luck!
great, now the kid's gonna be braking bigtime trying to "stride out".

focus on turnover when you start to tire!!! keyword: "quickquickquickquickquick" repeat this over and over in your head when you feel yourself starting to slow down!
go watch a LaShawn Merrit 400m race & look at his turnover & lift the last 100m - try to emulate this over the final 300m!!!
