Another Marathon Cheater?

he might be a cheater, yeah, but Athlinks is not a reliable source. I've finished just two races in the US, one of them running together with a friend who was trying to break 3h30. One might look there and think I am a 3h27 marathoner. if i was to run Boston this year and someone interviewed me and I said i'd try to run 2h35, people would call me liar if judging by athlinks.

Dude's just too vain to accept his 4-hr time and considering the marathon has turned into a tourist event, 3:03 makes him seem very fast to a lay-person, especially fellow chubby men in their 50s who can't imagine running a mile in 7:00, let alone 26.2 of them.

4 hours sounds really fast to most people, the lets run community isn't most people. In fact I'd venture to guess that the average "finisher" takes more than 4 hours to finish.

Except in this case, the only other races he's every posted where he's run close to 7 minute pace has been local 5ks. There are several of them. But we're supposed to believe he was jogging and pacing his friends in every race except the Boston marathon. The race were he said he decided not to wear his chip/bib and only showed up in pictures after 20 miles.

Out of curiosity, as someone who's best 5k time thus far is 19:03, what would you predict might be my best time in a half-marathon or marathon?

I've run a half, and am planning on running a marathon next year (and breaking 3 hrs... it's a very ambitious plan.)

McMillan, which everyone will tell you is way out of whack, says 19:03 for 5k could predict 3:05:37 for a marathon. Of course, the standard caveat is that you have to train for the marathon to the same degree that you trained for the 5k.

You could do it. What was your half time?

I think a 2:59 marathon is like an mid-to-high 18. I would expect a girl who runs 19:03 to be able to run maybe 3:02 and a guy who runs 19:03 to be able to run maybe 3:05.

If you're under 18 you should be way faster than 2:59 or there's something wrong with the way you're training for or racing the marathon.

In keeping with the theme of the thread, how fast you can run a half or full marathon would depend upon how much of the course you actually run.

If the chip was in the bib (was) then he ripped it out prior, that way he could say it malfunctioned or something.

And according to those photos a fat feck of fifty crossed the line in 3:17, yeah right.

Big deal. Someone allegedly shaves a couple minutes off their finishing time at some podunk race and in no time at all, this "running news" site starts their witch-hunt. This guy not only founded and runs a successful company (bringing much-needed jobs to a depressed rust belt city), but has also raised over $100,000 for the fight against cancer. This man didn't even hesitate to help some of the more severely injured victims at Boston for crying out loud.

Face it: you're all jealous of his success, or of anyone with a modicum of talent AND success.

He's got a talent alright but got caught out for it.

There's a right way and a wrong way regardless.

Interesting. The comments in response to the linked story suggest that this man is rather less than charitable in his business dealings. I wonder if that's true. Even if it is, he still could have raised lots of money for cancer charities AND helped out after the bombs went off last year. Still, he appears a troubled gentleman.

Yes, this was his explanation why he did not have an official time. He didn't wear the chip. So, he wears the bib but rips out the chip. Riiight.
