I assume part of the $10,000,000 could be used to bribe or otherwise influence whoever matters to make my job more to my liking. That shouldn't be hard ... a few drinks here, a few tickets there, and I'll have the nice office, parking in the building, and I'll be forgiven for skipping all early meetings.

I'll never have to worry about upward mobility, so I will have a lot of freedom to say what I want to whomever I want. And I imagine it would be easy to spread money to avoid being fired. Throw in I could get pizza for the office, massage day, magician day, etc whenever I cared to, and I think I'd do that job as long as I could.

But I would be broke at this point, so he would have to go to community college before transferring to a state school, but hey, it is better than his mother ever would have done for him.

Ah, thank you for this. You should write a short story. Or I will steal this idea.

I like the idea of working for a year and then declaring "I win at life", but I'm not sure I really would.

I'm assuming that I'd see other people earning the same amount of money (or more) at this job and so I'd see a lot of money being spent. After a few months I think I'd want some of the same things they have (a nice yacht, cool ski chalet, etc) and so I'd work a few more years to get it.

Once you get beyond a certain point, money is just a way of keeping score. The question is, if you find yourself in that environment, would you adopt the same attitude or would you continue to be the "Nope, I need enough to live on for the rest of my life and that's it"?

I'd work until I could earn almost the same by managing my fortune, 10-15 years maybe.

2 years. After taxes I'd have probably around $12 million. Enough to cover the rest of my life and the lifetime of my wife and children who don't exist.

I work at a finance company that has a lot of highly paid people who could retire early. I am consistently amazed by how few choose to do so. In fact, a lot of them have to be pushed out the door. I think there are a few reasons people don't retire as early as you'd guess under your scenario:

1. The job may be their passion. (you mentioned that you would "sort of like" this job, so I guess the hypothetical job would not be your passion).

2. They grow into an expensive life style and therefore need a lot of money to sustain it indefinitely. Living in a high priced city, vacation houses, the desire to travel a lot in retirement, divorce/alimony, planning for medical expenses, taking care of your kids, taking care of your elderly parents. It all adds. If you retire when you're 40, even if you have a lot of money, there is some considerable risk.

3. Once your kids are in school, there isn't a whole lot you can do if you aren't working. You can't travel. What are you going to do, sit at home and watch Price is Right?
