I have been a customer of the shops since 1992. In 1999 when they started the program (before Fila or Team USA or Oregon Project) they stated that they wanted an American medalist in the marathon by 2004. They were very specific about not caring whether or not it was one of their athletes, but any american. They said that if they can convince americans to train full time together that it was possible. They were right. Our 2 american medals came from training groups that followed the Hansons lead. I know that no one is prouder of Meb and Deena's huge accomplishment than Kevin and Keith.
I am sure that the Hansons are proud that Americans got medals, as are a lot of other people on this board. But saying that it was their program which caused a domino effect and made it possible is a bit of a stretch. People have been training together full-time or part-time in groups for years and years. By your reasoning Hanson can also take credit for American sprint medals since a lot of those guys train in "groups" (HSI/North Carolina).
Hansons I got the shits today, can you guys help?
I don't even know these guys but I think they got it started again. They are throw backs that believed it could be done again. They were the original Team USA. I remember reading the article where USATF said that the Hansons were the model program. A couple years later Team Cali started. I would say they were the first domino in the last 20 years. They are not a club. They are a training facility with all the perks. Mad props to Meb and Deena and any of the other super elites that bought into the group training atmosphere. I think Meb said it best. American distance running is back.
The Hansons were at a local race and were asked to bring gatorade. They show up with only water and the race director started to complain. Sell placed his hand in the water and it turned to gatorade - Orange flavor even! He said Orange because he wanted to be "like Mike".
amazing.

We are currently in the process of upgrading our message board. It is an "ecomm" site, so it has to go through a different company before it hits us. I emailed and talked with the guy who runs the show, he is working on it.
Thank you webMASTER. You are doing a great job on your site. Keep up the good work! I love it.
All hansons is doing is ruining runners by having them run the marathon when they aren't ready and should be improving their 1500/5k/10k times instead of running a not that special 2:15-2:20. Wake up and see that the hansons will never have a runner that will be able to really have a competitive time on the world scene or compete well in a major marathon. The coaches just don't have the knowledge or expertise to take their runners to the next level. Guys like sell, verran, brinker, and even eberly need to realize they are much better than the hanson program. If they expect to take their running to the level they want they need new coaches and training partners to take them there.

What are you talking about? Hanson's have 3 guys solidly under 2:15. What other team or club have been this successful? The ONLY way to get better in the MARATHON is to do MARATHON TRAINING and RACE MARATHONS. No number of 1500's or 5000's in the world are going to get you ready to race MARATHON. Brian Sell improves by 3-4 minutes every time he races a marathon.
My ONLY criticism of the Hansons programme is that they need to do more training in High-altitude and not so much in the ice-cold winters of Michigan. They are welcome to join me this winter in Baguio, Phillipines, for high altitude training, great weather and much fun.
Jason
They have taken guys that barely broke 30 minutes in college and they are running 28:30 for 10k. I wonder how guys like paul aufdemberge, ron johnson, don johns, gerard donakowski etc etc would have done if they could have all trained together in the late 80s when they were running their best times????????????????
What is your job jason? Just curious.

Never? That is a long time somerunner. Are you sure about that? Based on your knowledge and expertise, what is the time you have in mind which is necessary to compete well in a major marathon? Would you be interested in making a friendly wager backing your statement?
Brian, Clint, Joshua...
this guy says that you are much better than us... I guess you are going to have to leave because somerunner knows what is best for you. I loved running with you while it lasted... but I guess its time for me to say goodbye. I will miss you. I will always treasure the memories. You are the best teammates a guy could have. Alas... you need new "training partners to take you there"... there, that amazing next level.. the one that is always out of reach... the one we can never quite get to according to somerunner. When will he be happy? When will he be satisfied? I will do anything... anything to please somerunner... just don't make my Joshua go away. Clint, I will always miss that sparkle in your smile... that twinkle in your eye. And Brian, dear Brian, why must you go? Why do you need new coaches, why do you need new training partners? Why!?!?!? I will do better, I promise. I will run faster. We can do it... we can. Somerunner will help us. He can train with us... he can help Kevin and Keith. He will know what to do. Please somerunner, come to Michigan. Help us. Help our coaches... be our training partner who will take us to the next level. What do you say? Then we can dispense with this incessant bickering and work together as a team.
