I don't buy it kids get up super early Xmas morn it takes about 30 mins to open presents and your out the door.
I say tell em life sucks, Santas not real and you're deserting the family, only to come back after your run to his crying little a$$ when you say "Just playing". Then you make this an annual event.
Why not do the run tomorrow? Let the kid have his fun, enjoy the day and if the OP gets too antsy then run later when the kid is taking a nap. No need to spoil the day for him. I mean, would you not take your kid to Disney Land b/c the idea/place is not the real world?--just full of fantasy characters. I know plenty adults who still like to go to Disney...just saying.

I can not believe that a 5 year old wouldn't realize the truth about Santy.
I remember when I was 3 and some woman was visiting and telling about Santa delivering presents all over the world. I immediately dismissed such a thing as being preposterous. Even at a very young age I had a concept of the size of the earth how illogical that would be.
Switch to Judaism or Islam or some other religion to free up your Christmas.

It is people like you that are spearheading the immorality movement in America. Christmas is a great way to control children at an age where they need it most. There is nothing wrong with that putting in the effort to make them believe it. Also, it is important for a kid to figure out Santa is not real on their own. You can't give them all the answers to life.
So I'm against lying to children, and therefore I'm "spearheading immorality"? Somehow my kids grew to adulthood okay (no misdemeanors, anyway--much less felonies) without our systematically lying to them. In the spirit of the season: we were more into teaching them to be "good for goodness' sake" than trying to manipulate their behavior by stories about punishment by invisible guys.

Life should be like the Tenenbaums. You need to be honest with your 5 year old no matter what. If he brings you a drawing of a sun and a horse, you need to tell him it looks like crap. Like something a little kid would have drawn. If he runs a 3 minute 400, you need to tell him he's slower than your grandmother. If he doesn't grasp the simple concepts of algebra, you need to let him know he's an idiot. Don't ever make life easier for him or make him feel better about himself by telling a white lie.
Look. The answer is pretty simple. If you're training for a sub-2:25 debut and might have a shot at a Olympic Trials qualifier in a few years then what you're doing is ok. If you have some lame goal like breaking 3 and qualifying for Boston 2015 then you're just some selfish obsessive hobbyjogger. Given tha you said you're running 100 mpw but not much higher l am guessing you're just some 2:35-2:50 type. Verdict - selfish
There's no one with a family on LR who has a mid-week single of 15 planned for Xmas, a Wednesday. And few with families are doubling. I do know a guy who raced on Dec 24 and Dec 25, but he's not an LR guy. I love running early on Xmas before my family is up. No one is out. But just an hour.
So did you run? Did you break the Santa news to him?
