A good part of their training is believing they are going to win. When you don't, particularly after 7 in a row, it hurts. I saw the disappointment at the finish line. It was readily apparent. They are a close group and I would imagine most felt that they let their teammates down. Of course they have nothing to be ashamed of and they'll be back with a vengeance.

By the way, do you think the kids from York were disappointed about not even making it to the dance?

How many were/are coached by horrible collegiate coaches who have no clue what they are doing? That's the better question to ask. Many of the best coaches in the country are high school coaches. They can only do so much for an athlete. When their kids graduate, it is then up to the collegiate coaches to take them to another level...and many simply can't because they aren't good enough.

What makes Wayzata's win more of a headline is that in MN the cross country races for girls are a 4K.

I am not sure how much training was done to peak at this race but they must have done some.

This group of girls have been running in a pack for most of their races in the last couple of years and it has worked out well for them.

They send girls to Providence, Villanova, and Dartmouth among other places. Try and convince me or anybody else Ray, Gina, and Coogan are bad coaches.

There are two kinds of teams that finish in second place at xc meets. Stretch teams are usually pretty happy. Those that were very close or had as good of a shot as any at winning are usually a little disappointed, or at least have a bittersweet feeling about their placing. It's expected that a team like F-M is going to be in the later group.

Because they where not looking forward to the vicious beating they were about to receive from coach Aris on the flight home.

It's been said in many different ways so far, but I commented immediately after seeing it on Saturday by saying: They came to win, just like they have for the last 7 years, and anything but is upsetting. That level of tenacity is admirable. Winners aren't just happy to be there.

To be fair, Manlius had similar reactions after their victories. They never over-reacted to a win with extreme joy and hoorahs. They expected to win and accepted the victory after earning it.
