Has Sarah Baxter improved since last year?

She ran slower at the two biggest meets of the year, so no, I don't think she has improved over last year.

I would have killed myself if I didn't run faster my SR year.

Plateauing this year may be a good thing for her, so that she can make a jump next year.

It could also mean that 40-45 miles/week simply isn't enough for her anymore - she has adapted to that stimulus and needs more (and/or higher quality of it). If anyone should try and move that up a bit in the next 9 months, it is her. She doesn't really seem to care all that much for track - 1600/3200 - (will likely be a 5k/10k runner in College), and she doesn't have much in state competition anyway, so go for it. If she can handle 60miles/week by the time she gets to Oregon then perhaps she might have a stellar freshman season. Not sure why poeple think that you have to wait until the summer to boost mileage - spread that increase out over many months of cycical development.

But I agree with another poster - too many people focus on the mileage itself without also considering the intensity. Some people run their "mileage" too fast, and others too slow. There is an optimal intensity/effort for a given individual, finding that level is part of coaching.

Lol what kind of dumb reasoning is that? If you run faster then you've run faster. Running another meet slower doesn't erase the fact that you ran faster.

High mileage with a lot of quality is what separates the best from the rest. Low mileage plans are for high schoolers and Sarah is moving up from that.

She's an athlete, and I'm a fan.

It certainly wouldn't be "weird and creepy" to talk about a male HS senior who is dominant in his event--a Ritz, an Alan Webb, etc.

FWIW, IMHO--if someone is going to beat Baxter at NXN, that runner (or runners) is going to have to be physiologically better than Baxter on the day, as Baxter is *extremely* tough mentally. The template from her last two NXN victories is to start conservatively and push hard after halfway. If someone can stick with her and outkick her, great, but if she's healthy it's not likely to be easy.

The point is that she is going to be a 5k/10k runner.

The programs go from aerobic oriented to intensity oriented, Cal being the most focused on speed.

Here are the women's results, James Li who coaches the men's team like milers, is not the women's head coach at Arizona. That's Mo Huber, and she actually trains them for cross country.

Also someone put words in my mouth somewhere back there saying a female 6k runner does not need 100mpw. I agree, but going from 40 to 70 over the next few years would be a good way to go. And since she will most likely focus 10k in track... 70 or more would be ideal. But 40 isn't going to keep her improving the way more would.

Even look at a supertalent like Cheserek, he was a really good high school runner at 50 miles a week. Now he runs 80, and that leap took him all the way to the win.

Mo Huber is not the women's head coach at arizona, in no way is she the head coach. Fred Harvey is the director of men's and women's track and field and is considered the program head coach. James li the associate head track and field coach for men's and women's and the director of men's and women's cross country. The workouts and schedules and planning are done by Li. This is the coaching aspect, huber is there to record times and keep the paperwork.her role is to assist, not to coach
