The Derryfield Park course with its 1000 meters of paving is an illegal course and should not be used for a championship race. The trail portion is good but the first mile of fields / roads is awful. I will be writing a formal complaint to the New England Council about it.
Aside from that the races were fantastic and the talent is legit. The most impressive thing I saw was the girl from Staples High School their just destroying a good field of runners in the girls race. I cut up through the woods to the upper hill in the middle of the race and this kid was taking control. She was hardly breathing. The girls around her were all in pain.
What do you mean by 1000 meters of paving makes it illegal? You mean you run 1k worth if road and that makes it ineligible? For what it's worth the Wickham course I ran on had at least much paving from about 1-1.5 miles on the 5K course.
I ran cross country in CT when Haji and Coombs were there. I never wheeled the course or anything, but Wickham was the slowest course we would run on all year except for maybe Bethel. And the Wickham that I ran on had a large portion on asphalt. It's hard to believe that course was short. Occasionally if it was too wet they would use the "rain course", and I don't remember if the rerouting made it longer or shorter.

I have had kids qualify and run footlocker, that was before NXN. I taken kids (teams) there now too. Will never even consider footlocker again.

They'd run it up the pavement hill rather than the big grass hill at mile 1.5-ish. After running behind the starting line, you'd take a left back into the woods (the reverse of the way you come out back onto the field at the end, I think) and then take a right up a pavement hill. I think they used that course for New Englands in '95, if I remember correctly.
Yikes, that Freshman was the second man on the team that won. A 10th grader was their first man. Crazy
Speaking of Guor Marial...his 2003 course record at St Pauls School was broken yesterday by the winner of the D1 NEPSTA race, Mohamed Hussein of Northfield Mount Hermon.

I know speed ratings are hardly perfect but the ratings given seem really low

Compare that to the RI State champs ratings, apparently La Salle did worse but still managed to beat BH and a very strong Ridgefield team. Even more suspect when compared to NH MOCs at Mine Falls, a significantly faster course than Derryfield, where apparently 15:50 there is better than 15:40s on a tougher course.

You're probably right. All those Wickham races sort of blur together for me now.

Wickham was between 4850 and 4875 until about 2007 I think. The rain course was closer to 5k.
It is too bad the best Mass kids don't compete in this race. As long as the mstca is essentially running the show in Mass this will not change. They have to have all their Saturday Invites after the dual meet season finishes, so they can make their money and substantiate their existence, which pushes back the MIAA divisional and state meets.
this kid has been running for many years already, so he is a much more polished runner than almost all freshman. 15:46 is a serious 5k regardless of age, but this has been after 3 years of middle school high-competitve running, where he competed at a national level. Boys go through development late teens, so he will most likely have some growing pains and how he fares during that stage and after is anyone's gamble. A 14:45 5k is a stretch I believe. If this kid had never run before and showed up at cross country freshman year as a novice, then 14:45 seems to make sense, but with the volume and quality of training and competition for a handful of years prior, then he just seems to have a leg up on competitors at the moment and they'll catch up over the next couple years.
