But, you know, everybody do pretty much exactly what I do cause it's what works for me.

I've never understood why naps are supposed to be so important. Even working full time at a manual labor job and running 90 miles a week, I could never fall asleep in the day (and yes, I was training hard). Didn't have any issues with recovery, either. I think nutrition is much more important than 10 hours of sleep, but a lot of elites seem to barely pay attention to that.

Maybe the US distance runners need to start using their personalities to make them a valuable commodity to these businesses.

Become the American Yuki Kawauichi. Become someone who normal runners can look up to. Become a role model not someone who stares at the walls in your altitude tent.

Most elite runners in the USA are NOT role models.

Having worked and run in Colorado for a long time, I've had multiple coworkers and friends with normal jobs in the subelite space. Most manage to get in a lot of running including some guys that regularly hit 80-100 mpw. It's not that tall of a task if you don't waste a lot of time. Most jobs with a lunch break you can run, then add in a morning run and plenty of weekend mileage. Tell me how you couldn't be good under this schedule. Nobody needs more than 14 hours a week to train. That's 100 miles running slow. Run 2, work 8, sleep 8, you still have 6 hours left to eat, stretch, play xbox, whatever.

It's a good idea for most adults to have some sort of career anyway because running success is very hard to maintain over time.

I have little sympathy for the guys and gals affected by Competitor's decision. If they were helping Competitor be more successful, the decision would have been different. They are whining because they weren't helping a company be more successful and the company realized it? Lame!

All the whining over Competitor Group's decision smacks of jock entitlement. So the world owes you a decent living while you pursue individual athletic goals that attract zero attention, even from the growing population of recreational runners? They're supposed to offer you prize money and fly you to races, because you run at a sub-elite level and insist on living a narcissistic lifestyle that contributes basically nothing to anyone else around you?

Give me a break. If you can't make a living doing something, it's probably time to grow up and get a real job.

Why don't you blame USATF? Your sport's governing body can't come up with strategies to develop young talent or market the sport.

And to the OP: I support what you're getting at. Yes, it's sad that a professional running backer withdrew, but that's life in the real world (the real economy). Sack up, move on and if you're good enough, find another situation that allows you to train/race/not work.

If by "whatever" you meant;

commuting, shopping, laundry, cooking, cleaning, accounting, home/vehicle maintenance, showering, and getting dressed/undressed multiple times, then yes six hours should be more than enough time per day to have life and raise a family.

Half marathons with $165 fees and thousands of competitors, plus sponsors and all sorts of other profit making devices, generate enormous amounts of money, from which paying the best is a pittance. Putting together a race is not very complex. We do not need Competitor at all. You can put together a great race for very little money and still provide prize money. Anyone who enables those organizations should look in the mirror.

But, how the hell can you wake up at 7, run 8 miles and be at work at 8:30??? That just doesn't make any sense... and if you're going to commute home by running, what? Do you leave your car at work? You must live at work or something because if you have a commute, even a short one, this schedule of yours makes zero sense.

I work 40-50 hours a week and try to run as much as I can too, but really, you're misrepresenting how easy it is here - it's very, very difficult, especially with a family.

guess i should have explained clearer...

up at 7, out the door by 7:15, generally back from run by 8:00-8:10. super quick shower and i take the train to work, with clothes packed in a backpack to run back home in (only a few miles). usually i can hit an 8:22 or 8:28 train and i get to work before 9 everyday - almost never on the dot at 8:30.

OP makes some good points, imo.

Unless you are truly elite (Rupp/Lagat/Mo etc I cant even name the elite marathoners)...get a job. Society does not need to support 2:20 guys who might get to 2:15 or 2:12 with 100% dedication. Get a job, run your 2:20 and collect you medal or whatever.
