I've thought for a couple of years that Hasay has no future as a pro at the 1500 or 5000. It's been pretty clear to me that she's a 10,000 (and maybe up) girl.
We've seen a lot of kids run very solid miles in HS simply because they were aerobic monsters and they get caught up thinking that their actually milers or MAYBE 5000 runners. We saw that with Hall (3:42 1500 in HS) and he wasted much of his college career trying to be something he's not. His collegiate career track should've looked more like Rupp's.
I see Hasay the same way. For the last couple of years, she simply got lit up the last 300. This year, D'Agostino simply roasted her by, what, 7 seconds in the last 250 or so and others reeled her in. She simply doesn't have the wheels for the 15 or 5.
But last night (after learning from her heat problems at Regionals) she beat everyone except one of the most accomplished female distance runners in U.S. history. The 10 will be her sandbox in the future. I'd like see her try a marathon in the next few years, but only one. I don't want her to pull a Hall and go there and stay. I want her to test it to gather intel about her future potential at it, then drop back down and use the intel to plan a career path that may or may not include the marathon depending on how the debut goes.
Either way, her 15 days should be completely over, and the 5 should be a secondary event with the 10 being her event in championships.
