I suppose an olympic silver by an american in the 10,000m is a kind of "win", but the champion in that race was a foreign runner that was already very good before joining Salazar's camp.

In fairness, Farah did record a DNF in his debut marathon this April.

I remember the quote. You may be only talking about marathons, but I'm not -- and neither was Salazar's quote:

"'Then the commentators started gushing about an American taking sixth place,' Salazar recalled with incredulity. 'We started talking How can we be so bad? How can American distance runners be so bad that we're excited about sixth place? ... I told Tom that I could coach Americans to do better.'"

In other words, he was aiming to coach American distance runners to do better than sixth place -- which he has already done on multiple occasions.

The only mention of the word "marathon" comes in the previous sentence when he mentions that he was "listening to the conclusion of the Boston Marathon." But that doesn't mean that his entire project was formed with the goal improving performances in the Boston Marathon, or in marathons in general. That was just the spark for the conversation.

There are plenty of debates to be had about Salazar's approach, including his use of expensive technology and questionable medical diagnoses. But trying to argue that he hasn't been successful just makes you look foolish.

I appreciate your attempt to change the question. It helps in proving my point. Even the biggest Salazar defenders can NOT defend his lack of success with male runners in the marathon.

A 9th place finish and 3 minutes behind the leaders is his best performance by a male marathoner, during his entire career as a coach. OUCH.

I was of course talking about womens field hockey, not football.

Stupid a$$. He was watching the Boston MARATHON. He was talking about the marathon. He was wrong.

But Salazar has had success in other events, so that makes up for it.

Salazar's training group is too small to encompass every possible U.S. running success. I think it's reasonable to say that their successes have helped inspire other U.S. runners as to what's possible. We've had Meb's Olympic medal, Davila on the podium, and many more Americans threatening the podium in majors.

What is the point of all the negativity? If you care about U.S. running, things are certainly better than they were, and look very promising for the future. Someday Rupp will try the marathon and we'll see what happens. There's lots of promising young talent who have seen that we can be medal contenders, and will no longer be happy with 6th or 4th in the future.

Who else could be promising marathoners in the future? Maybe Derrick, Puskedra, True?

He's grossly underestimated the impact of the unequal distribution of the world's gene pool. What matters is nature not nurture.

The problem with salazar is that because he is a cheat anybody associated with him is tainted. Farah or elfie rupp pull out of a race, I instantly think that it is due to misdosage. If hasay becomes a NOPer, I'll never believe any good results from her are clean.

How many people ran faster than 2:07 for the marathon in 2012? 2011?
