Lashawn Merrit ran that 1:58 as a WARMUP in college before the 400 you idiot. He could have ran under 1:50, are you kidding me? And Michael Johnson would have crushed Rudisha in the 600.

no way super cool dude maybe 12 miles an hour is SOOO easy that he could keep it for 50 miles ya think ya think???

Someone who disagrees with you is Michael Johnson. I believe his statement was that he couldn't go beyond 400 meters and that he was really a 390 meter runner and coasted the last 10.
He held the world record in the 200. Maybe the logic of doubling the distance was already in play here to the 400. Just because he could run 44 more easily than anyone in history, that doesn't correlate to being able to throw down a couple of 50's back to back. The 800 is quite a bit different event than the 400. It's not like going from the 5000 to the 10000.
Back around 98/99 MJ did a work out on my local track. He did at least 10 200s in about 30 seconds each and looked like he was jogging. He was in training shoes(pegasus or air structure?)and generic looking cotton sweats (crew neck and sweat pants)
Dude, 30 second 200s in trainers and sweats!! He'd destroy the 800. 1:38!!!

It's too bad after you saw this that you didn't tell him that he was capable of 1:38 so he could have known?
MJ was a very organized and calculating athlete, it's too bad he had no idea that he was also capable of the 800m WR all this time.
Had he known he would have raced it, run the 1:38 you say he was capable of, and then we wouldn't have to have the debate we have every 3 months over this.
Post Script: if your story is true, I can imagine that 30-sec 200s would be very easy for a guy who can run 19.32 and 43.18.
Another poster said he jogged at 3:00 mile pace, so his hard running must have been at 2:00 mile pace or faster.

are you joking? have you ever run an 800? they are LITERALLY worlds apart. want proof? go look at Oregon 44.x 400m Mike Berry's 800m PR. 2:01. Lashawn Merrit 1:58!! you people CLEARLY don't know ANYTHING about energy systems in running. Michael Johnson would tie up at 500m and DNF and ANYONE who thinks otherwise has ZERO running knowledge/experience
i mean, i agree with you there, but it is pretty obvious those guys also werent trying very hard when they were running it and/or weren't experienced. Berry and Merritt, if they gave a crap/life was on the line, would run low 1:50s, maybe even just barely sub 1:50, without any specific training. They would have 0 shot at approaching the WR obviously or even elite status. i mean, most of these guys run numerous 400s and 600s and such during intervals in training at pretty quick clips. 2:00 is pretty damn slow when you run 44...
The guy HAD to be super relaxed to stretch himself to 400m.
So why didn't he just do it? It should have been so easy for him. Fact: the 800 was too difficult for him. He was too lazy and shiftless to do the training. Wow, that says something; too lazy to run for another 50 seconds..

If you watch the 1996 Olympic Semi-finals of the Men's 400m then you'll see that Michael Johnson JOGGED 44.66 for the win. Even the announcer said he jogged it, and if you really take a good look at it, it absolutely looked so easy to him. Its incredible to even see. With his unique "upright running style" and his very smooth efficient running, there's no doubt in my mind he could have broke Wilson Kipketer's former 800m World Record and go under 1:40 for 800m.
Agreed. The 44.2 guys can run 1:40.9 too.
Ever heard of Jarmila Krachtochvilova?
Dude, if Michael Johnson is a 1:39 800 guy I'm pretty sure he had a mile world record in him. I mean, think how easy it is for a 1:39 guy to jog a 1:49. Put two of them together and boom! he's a 3:39 miler.

You mean he went down to the local track. It must have been after he watched a track meet with Larry Rawson commentary and took Larry literally.
Don't you think if Michael Johnson thought he could have done it he would? Who would turn down the chance to run a WR, especially if they thought they could EASILY get it? Especially a cocky got like Johnson, he easily would have wanted to say "I'm the 200m, 400m, and 800m WR holder"
Clearly he didn't think he was capable so he didn't do it. That's how it works
figuratively worlds apart. earth and mercury are literally worlds apart.
mj had the stamina to possibly run a very good 8 but the physique suggests not, while wariner had the stamina and the physique (6'-145 lb) to do it with training. rudisha is probably worth low to mid 44 at 400m if he concentrates on it, as he just ran 45.15 in the early season and not concentrating on it.
The 800 is a sprint. Just because clueless hs coaches force white distance runners to do it doesn't make it a distance event.
Question, who holds the hs national 4x8 record for girls? They sure as heck weren't distance runners!
What would you call all those Jamaicans at Penns killing the 4x8's. Distance runners?
Michael Johnson could have run an amazing 800, but he focused on the 200 and the 400.
He was a 10 flat 100 runner.
When the US finally wakes up and realizes that the 800 is a sprint, then maybe our national record will finally be lowered and we'll get some medals!
Lets rephrase the question. If you think it is so easy and it is so obvious, give us you best shot why he never did it.
I think if he actually tried during February-May...he could probably run 1:46...or similar.
This was extracted from his training book.

workout including 2 x 500 Speed 56 seconds 400/rest 15 minutes caught my eye.
that is 11.2 seconds per 100 m.
at that pace you get 600m in 67.2.
is that right?
If Michael Johnson really "jogged" a 44.66, why was he never able to run more than 1.48 seconds faster? Surely if he could "jog" 44.66, he was capable of 41 or 42 seconds for 400m all-out?
