OK, I'll go out on a limb. Thomas Longowisa wins in 12:54.6, Rupp second 12:54.8.
Of the Americans I'll say rupp 1st and Derrick second - you have to go with the guy with the momentum, and no one has more momentum than Derrick.
Lagat is not the same Lagat - the guy is really old and seems to have lost a step. Derrick is en fuego and this will be an early season race for Lagat.
I wish Lomong were running - he would probably be right with Rupp.

This is a 5000m, not a 10000m. Should Levins also get in the 800 or 1500 based on 10000m accomplishments?

I agree. For this to happen, Lagat will have to run awfully, and Derrick would have to have a spectacular race.
All very early season, so hard to predict but....
Rupp looked very relaxed for 5.5 laps at O. Twilight, although the time was nothing special for him. It's very early, but perhaps did not look quite as powerful over the last 2 laps as last year? I was surprised he gave the lead back to Ritz on lap 7. Derrick looks ready to go under 13:10, probably by more than a second or two. No idea where Lagat is for 5000 based on Penn mile leg, but I will be very surprised if he does not get the job done. Schumaker's group has been strong in late indoors/early outdoors. At Jordan, it looked like the pace would have had to go substantially faster to drop Jager. If they go for qualifiers at Oxy and the mile at Pre, I think we'll see some PRs. Too bad Lomong isn't in the Pre 5000. 5000 AR indoors + 1:47 half last week = 12:5x
On an unrelated note, why wold the Pre tell obvious lies about Prefontaine in the press release, which states:
"While competing for the University of Oregon, he won national cross country championships (3) and outdoor track 3-Mile/5000-meter championships (4) every time he competed, and never lost a collegiate race at any distance."
Pre did NOT win XC every time he ran it (Gerry Lindgren, anyone?), and he was defeated in a couple of collegiate miles. You'd think that the meet organizers would know this stuff.

well the more I think about it the more I doubt myself - but my thinking is based on a heavy weighting of world xc, where Derrick finished 10h, right with a 59 minute half marathoner from ethiopea - and he ran 13:12 indoors in a low pressure race. (Albeit on a track I think is faster than most outdoor tracks.)
And I just haven't been all that impressed by Lagat lately - he ran 7:35 this year, which is great, but in a race situation he seems to have lost his confidence. He waits too long to go. And I am sure Lagat is pacing the season - He won't be peaking on June 1.

agip - you're a good dude. But Derrick beating Lagat this year? No, aint gonna happen.
Rupp vs Lagat vs Kenyans and Ethiopian. In what might as well be a separate race: Derrick vs Mead vs Levins.
I'll agree that Lagat hasn't raced in awhile (other than Penn) and that he won't be firing on all cylinders, but....come on. When was the last time he fell off the pace of the leaders in a track race? Probably never in a race in the US. And I know for sure that Derrick won't outkick Lagat, even if he is 48.
