THIRTY SEVEN (37) 7th-8th grade boys have run under 6:00 for the mile at the school I work at!!??

On my kid's middle school track team there are 14 girls under 7 min. in the mile. The fastest girl ran 5:37. There are 15 boys under 6 for the mile. The fastest time currently is 5:27.

Five 6th grade boys under 5:10?? That's way more impressive and ridiculous than what I posted.

Yeah, this is hard to believe with that small of a class and all sixth graders to boot. More believable if you threw some 7th graders into the mix. Here are the results of the largest class in the IL state middle school finals for 7th grade last year. Only 18 boys in 6 or 7 grade ran 5:10 or better. This meets previous winners include Lukas Verzbicas, Jorge Torres, Kevin Havel (holds boys 7th grade record of 4:31.75)

You will never convince me that you had five boys under 5:10 in one sixth grade class. Eighth grade, maybe. Sixth grade? No way.

He must have gone to the International School of Super Early Puberty for Kids Who Can't Read Good and Wanna Do Other Good Stuff too..

I was pretty average, finishing my high school career with a 4:01 1500m. In grade eight, I ran 5:56 for a mile in cross-country training. You, however, went to school with some very, very talented 11 year olds!

if your cutoff to make the high school team is 6:00 mile in a time trial you are definitely kicking off some potential 15min 5k guys. Perhaps its worth it if you have a 60+ person team even with the cuts.

My school had 100 boys in sixth grade and 80 of them were under 4:15. It's not that big of a deal

On the middle school team I work with I had 10 7th and grade boys out of my 14 distance boys run under 6:00. Had one run 4:45, 5:18, 5:27 for the top 3.

4:45 in 7th grade is very quick.

I would think that around 10-15% of a class of boys should be able to run 6:00. So the OP had 37 out of 340 break 6:00. That seems fairly normal. I'm a PE teacher and our middle school boys probably average 7:45-8:00 as a whole (6-8th grade). 70 guys, and we've got maybe 10-15 that could break 6:00. I know 10 have and there are 5 others that would if they would try. On the other end, there are 10-15 that are 9:00-10:00 on a regular basis.

5 6th graders under 5:10 for the mile.... nope. You would need 2,000 sixth grade boys in the class. Are there 5 6th graders nationally that can do that?

I was a 5'07 and 5'04 guy in 7th n 8th grade with little practice, but w only had maybe 3-4 guys out for XC and distance races in track..everyone wanted to be a sprinter..you must have great depth in your school with 37 kids under 6'00 mile but I was still slow in Jr. high..We had a few 4'40 and 4'50 guys running around..

If you had 5-7 guys under 5'30 that would be more impressive and a great starter team for the high school level

My middle school team MIGHT have had 25 guys on it. 2 of us broke 6 (5:20 and 5:30), don't think anyone else even ran the 1600

My "all-out" mile progression was something like:

7th 7:30

8th 6:25

9th 5:45

10th 5:40

11th 5:15

12th 5:10

freshman 5:00

The thing that impresses me about those 37 guys is not that they COULD, but that they DID. That requires leaving their comfort zones. The thing is though, as long as you aren't like actually slow, I think that middle school can't predict talent (or lack thereof) very well.

It took me until freshman year of high school to break 3:00 for 800, but now I can run 2:10. Other girls who were winning middle school meets with 2:40 still haven't broken 2:30 4 years later.

It all depends on development and mental attitude.

I would say that my school had about that many run under 7:30 (out of 250ish per class so 500 total). Not sure if trolling.
