Andres Arroyo Does 6x600m at 4:00 pace to prep for sub 4:00

Yes, it's important to avoid grinding up a super talented kid with tons of meaningless races. But the Florida state series are clearly not meaningless races to the kids and teams who run them. This is what high school track is about. And as rojo pointed out, these meets will be quality/speed workouts for Arroyo, not taxing all-out efforts that will burn him out.

But more important, rather than "so disappointing", I found the interview so refreshing. Here's a kid who clearly loves to race, loves to be part of his team, has great support on his team and in his school, and is running high school track as it's meant to be run. He has lofty goals, but at the same time, he is obviously well grounded and intends to stay that way.

He didn't bypass high school track because he was a phenom at age 12. He's not being trained by an outside private coach. He didn't quit his team because he's too good for them. He's not cherry-picking a handful of set-up races all over the country. He's a high school kid doing a high school sport, and excelling at it.

What could possibly be wrong with that?

You don't give any names. I mean runners who seriously compete at the top level in both distances. Manzano might have dropped down for one race to run a 1:44 but he's obviously a 1500m specialist and no one is seriously suggesting he should have specialized 800.

Centrowitz is no great shakes at 800. Lomong's 800m PR is respectable but not top class and he's gone to the 5000m. Again, no one is suggesting these were "lost" 800m elites.

Arroyo's 49.09 400m is good for a developing 1500m runner but doesn't shout "800m specialist."

I'd like to see this kid run Pre Classic.

Wesley ran 1:45 in May of 2012....so your argument doesn't really tell much.

Wesley is a much better 800 meter runner than Andres. But Andres has a 400-5k range....Wesley is a pure 800 runner.

BTW the rest in those 400 repeats its way to much....try doing 14 of those with a min break and then we are talking. Or do 6x400 at 54 pace.

They were 600m repeats...

(Also: whenever people talk about too much rest they always say do so and so with one minute rest/45 sec rest. Roger Bannister did 10x400 with 2 min jog and he got sub four. And Arroyo is quicker than him over 800. Mindless ramble sorry)

I hadn't hear of Vazquez, but his results are impressive, 1:45 at 18 last year, faster than anything any North American hs runner had ever done. Arroyo can still drop a lot of time with a rabbit and better yet a race against elites this year, whether in the 8 or 1500/mile. And he's not come close to 8:45 2M but he could easily drop a lot of time with competition in the deuce. The Jim Ryun mile could give him his chance against a number of sub4 possible high schoolers this year but I'd like to see him get into a college meet with open runners, at the very least.

You can't compare a Florida XC runner to a Michigan XC runner. Our XC season is hot as hell -- there's no way our kids can compete with runners who have had months of good weather to train in.

6 x 600m at mile pace is going to benefit both his mile and his 800m. That's a great workout. Also, don't forget that we aren't sure what he's doing on the other days as well.

if you do 10 x 400 on 1 minute rest, 600m is only 200m more yet you're taking 2 additional minutes between? way too much.
