Yes, Ameri-can'ts need a special olympics style *. They have to be able a claim a record some special way.

In general, I think that most LRC's expect sub 13:10 and 3:50 indoor performances from Alan Webb. Its great that Lopez is showing such great range.

Lots of people think that, Salazar's effort to reduce Webb's upper body mass was a good idea. However, I think Lopez is showing that you can still run fast over a wide range of distances with above average muscle mass for a distance runner.

Nice to see Bumbi get humbled once again. Derrick was too far away for Bumbi to use his legendary lean-at-the-finish skills, but I didn't see the full race. Did Bumbi also try shoving Derrick in the back to intimidate him?

Lomong is doing some great things... seems likely that we're going to see another American under 13 this year. 10 years ago, who would've guessed that we'd have 6 active US runners with PRs under 13? Jager's steeple time suggests that he might be there some time too.

Anyway, congrats to Lopez and all of Schumaker' group... impressive stuff.

I agree with you Lomong is causing lots of ripples in American distance running. To put it into perspective, this was Lomong's first 5k indoor ever. And he gets the American Record! The question in the minds of many is, "how fast can this guy run once he has the same experience Rupp and Lagat have in the 5k?" Last year in his first ever(serious) 5k outdoors, he runs an unbelievable time of 13:11. And that was after stopping with one lap to go before proceeding to finish the race! Seems to me like he could have ran 13:05 that day. On the American Record, I think it was and is still a soft one. Remember steeple chaser Paul Kipsiele Koech has run 13:02 and Daniel Kipchirchir Komen has run 13:06. And these guys are not specialists in the distance. With many indoor tracks and indoor races in the US, the American Record should at least be around 12:59.

No, a white foreign born should get an * too. It just isn't as easy to tell by looking at them.

It seems that folks memories are way too short. Lomong was a cross country boss at NAU and dominant 3k runner indoors. I would have loved to see Chelanga, Lomong, and Lalang in college at the same time in a high-quality cross race. His running the 800/mile the last few years seemed to be only preparation for his real, natural event--5,000 meters. Please, don't be surprised if Lomong set some nasty records outdoors this AND next year. Expect it!
