Do go out too hard. Be fast and relaxed. What are your goals for the race? Report back and tell us how it goes.
I'm aiming for a 2:18.

Low 20's throughout the season and a 19:40 TT at the end. :( Turns out, 5k isn't my strong point.

If you're used to sprinting, then you should know that, as a beginning distance runner, you are much much further from your potential than you were as a beginning sprinter.
Whatever you try will be wrong and you will learn on the next one.
The hardest distance to figure out how to race.

Yeah, I understand. Though, I spent the same amount of time in sprints as I did training for the 5k (actually, 1-2 months less), and my 100m ability turned out to be superior. But in the bigger picture, neither of them are competitive, so I'm seeing if the 4/8 is something I'd be better at.
Actually, disregard the comparison I made, David Brent. I guess I didn't catch the "beginning sprinter", just the "sprinter."
I can tell you that the 800 is a very hard race from a pain perspective. If you run it to your best ability, you'll find the lack of oxygen and buttlock toward the end of the race to be pretty painful. The good news is that it's so short it's over before you really realize it. Then again I was a 3200 guy in high school and I'm a marathoner now.
This usually works for me:
Set off sprinting
Speed up half way round
Finish even faster
Cannot fail
Thanks for the advice guys. I'll be back to report the results on Thursday (or Friday).
I give the same advice I give to guys having sex for the first time:
Start hard and stay hard.
run as fast as you can
turn left
It's embarrassing to post this, but I said I would, so here it goes.
Today I ran both my first 400 and 800. I hit 57 in the 400. Moving onto the 800, I guess I didn't even really race it..I was so nervous that I couldn't even remember any of the advice given to me here. I wasn't even sure how tired I was after the 400 so I was really conservative (dumb..) My first move was flying into the first lane (.. sigh.). Came through the first 200 in 35 and felt fine. I honestly don't even know what happened after that. When I finished, I had so much left in the tank. I'm frustrated that I basically just wasted an opportunity to see what my 800 ability is. I have another race this upcoming Wednesday so hopefully I've learned my lesson and will actually run it the right way this time. It doesn't really matter, but my time was 2:30. Sorry for the disappointing response.
Unless that was your last ever race, you'll be fine. Take your less than optimal races as lessons and your good ones as achievements. Next time go out harder, simple really.
Coming as a sprinter it will take a while for you to get your times down
Don't over compensate and go out crazily fast on Wed. In your next race concentrate hard from 400m to 600m as its easy to drift off the pace in that section
800m is one of the hardest distances to get the pace right so don't worry just go in and get more experience
That Mo guy liked his first 800 so much he carried on and completed a whole marathon. Wow.
Thanks guys (: I'll be back on Wednesday.
57 is very good your first time out. The 800 will come around.
Run like it was your last race of your life to show what you got and what you have spend every da yfor.
show haters what u got
Don't run the 400 first next time. That is a very difficult double and don't know too many that can do both in one meet. Gotta have a ton of endurance for that double.
If you can go 800 and then 4 x 400, that is great speed work for your 800. 57 is good!
Stay positive and fast times will come. I'm a hs coach and have seen amazing progressions by all sorts of runners over the years.

Yeah, I understand that my 800 suffers because of the 400. But I have to run at least two events. I actually ran 400, 800, and 4x400 at the meet. But I was only subbing a leg for an injured runner, and likely won't have the opportunity to run it again because my 57 is too slow.. (The relay is comprised of a 52, 53, 53, and 54-55. + another 54-55 runner on standby, who hadn't shown up to the meet that day). So I chose to do the normal 400 for speed work instead.
