Absolutely. I'd say the drunk driving (if trues) is worse. I mean, that behavior kills numerous people every year, so why do we forgive it so easily?

That should have been it, right there. I understand how hard it can be to speak out against a coach, especially in terms of inappropriate relationships. But a clearly intoxicated coach taking the wheel of a team van and swerving from lane to lane? How could you not call 911 if you were that male runner? If you are sure enough about it to tell a reporter after the fact, then certainly you were convinced enough at the time to call 911.

I disagree. It's easy for you to say that at this point. It's a different thing for a 20-year-old to call 911 on a coach that purports to be your friend, and that controls your running future. What if the cops came and his BAC was under the legal limit? The athlete doesn't want to risk straining his relationship with the coach. Hell, the athlete might have thought it was badass at the time, only to later realize how f'ed up it truly is. Hadsell partied with the kids, constantly texted them, etc. It's not as simple as you might think to turn on someone with his level of authority.
I bet the dudes on the XC team were sick about this. Your coach is pounding more @$$ from the girls team than any of them.. that's gotta hurt the ego.

This is true. Kevin was my roommate in college and we've kept in touch ever since he started coaching in 1994. About the time he resigned, he told me that he was about to be publicly eviscerated and acknowledged that he had it coming, and that it wasn't going to be fun. He expressed some frustration over the way some of the players were handling things, but I believe him when he says that not sullying the UT program and its student-athletes any more than his actions already had was on his mind at least as strongly as anything resembling damage control -- he agreed that that ship had not only already left port but crashed into an iceberg somewhere.
It is human nature not to emerge from a huge pile of sh*t smelling any worse than circumstances demand, but again, Kevin would agree that he would not expect his apologies, statements, putative disclaimers or anything else from his end to mitigate whatever judgments people have formed as a result of what's happened, and he doesn't expect that a few pretty words in print to neatly erase the effect his mistakes have had on people's emotional states, not only the people at the center of this but those who struggled with whether to turn a blind eye at various times.
That's probably more than enough already. Kevin is looking ahead to "the next stage of life," as he puts it, but has no plans to ignore what's happened and merely run from it. I've never known him to not try to clean up after his own messes, so there's that.

BTW, you're not really owning up to your mistakes if you blame "letting people get too close to you" for this situation as opposed to blaming yourself for strong-arming vulnerable women into sleeping with you. And there's the whole drunk driving thing and generally acting/texting like a 12-year-old.

Then you accept the negative consequences, which yes, might be significant. But nobody ever said that doing the right thing was risk free. And to me, the greater risk here is clearly the probability (not certainty) of a drunk coach behind the wheel.

That's certainly a possibility. I hope he does realize that he should have done something at the time (in terms of the drunk driving).

I never said it was simple. But a clearly intoxicated driver taking the wheel of a van full of student-athletes is about as clear-cut a situation as you're going to get as far as saying yeah, someone should have spoken up right then. And I think it is important that, yes, with the benefit of hindsight and distance, we point out times when people should have stood up.
So maybe the next kid that sees a coach they think is intoxicated take the wheel will call 911.

This type of thing happens all the time and schools do nothing about it. The head and assistant coach of my school were doing girls on the team. The head guy I never actually witnessed. But he married a girl that was a former athlete less than two months after her graduation. So any AD would have to realize it was going long before. From my understanding years before she graduated. The assistant I actually saw in action take a freshman girl into a back room at a party. I am not going to put the names on here. But I will give another clue besides my name. one of the trails off our cross country course was called pawpaw

Here's what really happened . Seriously WHAT REALLY HAPPENED: so this former athlete was interested in Hadsell. He was in (obviously) to thia chick and this chick was obviously (and she isn't the victim) she is 23 years old and pursued the heck out of him (weird I know).... They enjoyed their relationship unfortunately her roommate had a crush on Hadsell and couldn't wrap her head around the fact that they were together. The sociopath (the roommate) thought to be every guys dreams. He choose her roommate over her and she eventually couldn't handle it. Also the fact that her roommate found out she was crazy along with carrying an eating disorder that she continues to deny and her family continued to try and control. Her roommate is now dating a runner for hansons. Pity for him because he has no idea she is using him at all to become a pro runner ..... Regardless she has major issues and because her roommate (who was into Hadsell) knew this didn't know what to do. She originally quit the team to go professional. She though that a professional team would want her and they didn't. Who would waste your college years ? toledo made her hood? right? She genuinely believed that Hadsell sabotaged her in this process so she used her previous text messages (which were obviously staged) to make him resign. Truth be told what he did was wrong in engaging those text messages but they were obviously staged. This chick is a sociopath and I swear this is the absolute truth. She is making everyone feel sorry for her when she isn't the victim an shhenyinelu had a thing for the guy. ..... I personally know its wrong but in NO way is this guy shady in any way. She flirted the heck out of him and it's a complete fabrication. Done and done.
