Very few of those grunts will end up managing an entire restaurant. The starting salary for an engineer is much greater than that, and a manager of engineers in a similar position at firm with the revenue of Chipotle makes far greater than $99,000.

Truth. I know many engineers and very few of them make over 100k.

I'm single, with no kids, so that to me is more than enough! If you're single and childless, you can easily get by on 30K/yr after taxes.
I drive a 99 honda accord already paid for and it still runs great. Wasnt mine originally of course.

30k (even after tax) wouldn't even cover my mortgage/HOA/property taxes (and I have a very modest 1 BR). I was paying more than 30k a year in rent for studios/1 BRs before. I love how people think everyone lives in their super low cost of living area.
I certainly made do on well under 30k a year in college and grad school, but after taxes in an expensive area 80k is spreading it pretty thin. And what about retirement/providing for a family?

Absolutely right. There's a perception that many people make a lot more than they really do. The truth is, the average American Family lives on less than 50 grand a year.

Look, anyone can spend more than they have to. There are less-expensive housing choices where you live. You decided not to live there for whatever reason. You too could make it on $30k no matter where you live.
In a big city, a safe apartment would probably cost you at least 1K/month for a 1br. More people to compete with for safer areas, so the price is gonna be high. Some people have no choice unless you're willing to trade your safety for a few hundred off the rent.

You're missing the point. Nobody is saying 80,000 is something to be ashamed of. Rather, we're comparing it to the Chipotle worker who makes more than that and doesn't even have an engineering degree (or any degree). You know, the point of this thread.

I can't imagine a less interesting or remarkable position than burrito store manager. Sure, good for her and all, but who cares. There are plenty of people who make $100,000 without a college degree. I'm much more interested in the engineer whose labor produces something tangible and unique than in the woman who manages a burrito store, even if he makes less money.
Engineering salaries vary widely with geographic location, engineering field, experience, and combination with other types of compensation.
There are some people in those areas who make what seems like a lot, but what is only reasonable once cost of living is considered.
EE's and software developers do well, but tons of things are offshored now. Engineering salaries are dropping across the board, except for civil (ditch engineers) in the public sector, where wages go nowhere but up.
Engineers who are involved in start-ups are more properly treated as business people than engineers, as their primary concern is business ownership/mgmt, rather than the practice of "engineering".
Like I said, I set stuff like this up--or more properly, tear it down in the USA and rebuild it elsewhere for much cheaper. Boutique stuff still exists in the USA and for sure there is still "engineering" to be had, but a lot has left already--and a lot of the people here now are on visas, and work for much less than you would believe, especially in elec/SW.
