You think Rupp can only run 51 for 400 meters?

Yes
Pace will lag from 800-1300 after the pacer drops off, which will leave them at about 3:53 or so. It will be cool to see centro and rupp going at it in a mile though. It's still early, in a peak race they could push eachohter to a a sub 3:50 easy

i wouldn't say "easy" when the world record is 3:48.45
rupp just wants another of lagat's ARs

It's hard to see Rupp going sub-3:50 indoors. I think great goals for him outdoors are sub-3:50, sub-12:45, and sub-26:30. Those would be great career goals. I do believe either this year or next, he will hit his peak.
sub-12:45 and 26:30??? Are you nuts? Never going to happen.
someone had to do it wrote:

I would say that 3:48.45 is pretty weak as the mile isn't all that frequently raced indoors. I agree that Rupp can hit in the ballpark of 3:53 here right now if everything goes really well (it's indoor and early), maybe 3:50 flat at his peak, but I would agree that it wouldn't be easy.
lol lol lol lol wrote:Eamonn ran 1:47 and by his own admission couldn't run much if any faster than 50-flat for 400 meters. That's probably no better than what Rupp is capable of.
guy is very under-rated
on those tight indoor tracks, his 3'49 had to be worth 2 - 3s faster outdoors
problem was he looked "intimidated" by ovett & then coe & tended to run their races & leave it to a last lap sprint, where he stood no chance
he needed to use his strength & run the races like morceli did in his 3'27i wr - take it from 600 out
i can't see 50 & 1'47
( 1'47.7pb in '77 - many years from his peak in '83 )
perhaps
50.0 / 1'46.5 ->
3'30.8
3'47.5
to
50.0 / 1'46.25 ->
3'29.9
3'46.5
( other variations require sub-50 but 1'45+ with it, which may be a bit quick for his 800 )
i do think he was capable of 3'30 in his 3'49iwr shape but never raced ideally outdoors
Outdoor he can threaten Webs AR?!?!?
Only 3 people have gone under 3:50 indoors, for reference.

I don't know why Ritz scratched, but since the next best guy in the field would have been Jim Rosa (or someone of that quality), maybe Ritz and Salazar thought it would be better to train. Coincidentally, on this very day Ritz was announced as an entrant for the Millrose two-mile. If Ritz were hurt (he worked out at UW on January 5), even a bit, I can't imagine that Salazar would run him at indoors at all.
Didn't Ritz get hurt on a tightly banked indoor track a year and a half ago? Now, he's going to run 2-miles at Millrose?!
In an earlier thread someone asked whether Ritz would be running indoor races and I wrote that I hope not, given his history of foot problems. But maybe Ritz's scratching had nothing to do with being nicked up. I suppose we'll find out soon enough.

I think we should continue to underestimate Rupp. He'll never medal in London, that's for sure.
1500... on an outdoor track. Slow down to accommodate for the indoor track and like I said, 3:52 if he's lucky.
The article says the Dempsey indoor mile record is 3:53. I bet they're going for the record. I also bet that Centrowitz will outkick Rupp. Although, I won't be surprised if he doesn't.
Considering the American Record is Bernard lagat's 3:49.89, if Rupp/Centro were even thinking of going sub-3:50, this race would be advertised as an attack on the American Record. There would also be talk of the 1500 en route time where the American Record is Bernard Lagat's 3:33.34.
I find it completely unlikely that these guys would attempt to PR, set American Records, and enter the top 10 all time list on the first race of the year.
Centro wins in 3:54...and that ain't bad.
Oversized tracks do NOT count for world or US records.
Rupp can't beat Centro in a mile, I don't think. Maybe Centro could go 3:49/3:50, because he cruised to 3:53 last year. The thread should read "Centro going for 3:50 mile?"
Rupp is one of the best runners in the world now. He can certainly go through in 155 feeling good. Same with Centro.
Those two are not trying to run 355-358 like the rest of the good collegiates. They're world class. So they're going to go after these huge times.
3:53.18
