Gibb, what did you do before you taught?
missouriwhatever, usher could coach circles around you or anyone you know. You aint funny you gutless anonymous coward.
Wow I guess $61,000 isn't considered a decent salary these days. That's almost twice what a typical small college coach makes.
What's the poverty level up to now for a single person now?
$38,000?
As an unpaid assistant...I wonder how much I spend on Gatorade alone in the summer...Everyday for 8 weeks.....then there's entering guys in road and open cc meets in the summer who can't afford it....
And I too should stop posting on message boards....A highly addictive habit.
I was a youth counselor for at-risk youth in detention centers, group homes, etc.
This might make you H.S. coaches in the states feel a little bit better to know that H.S. coaches in Canada get payed nothing to coach.Oh yea my first Head Coaching job at a NCAA Division I school payed $8000.00 a year.
I make $3800 for head XC, $3200 for assistant track, and around $56,000 for teaching. I would and have coach for nothing.
Assistant - $4000 per season
Head Coach is $5600 per season
Actually, Missourirunner, I find it extremely helpful that a coach with as many years experience as Coach B has posts on Iowapreps. He always has insightful things to say and is a class act. Never anything negative to say.
UF, that's exactly on the money with the $$ comparison to a small college coach. I had 10 years experience and a masters degree when I took a job as a head cc/track coach/lecturer at a DIII school and was making just over 30k, but that was the most I'd made to that point. That is a big part of why I'm back in school to get a teaching certificate. The other is that I don't want to be on the phone for 2-3 hours every night and on the road for all three seasons per year etc. etc. It's not a bad gig when you're young with no kids, but it gets old when you'd like to see your own family occasionally. Plus, my feeling is that you impact a high school kids life more, but that's just my opinion.
Head Boys XC (2nd year ) $2500
Asst. Girls Track $1800
Probably not gonna return to track cuz head coach is a friggin idiot who can't take splits and doesn't show up to practice but gets to keep his job.
When I coached hs: $700 as head of xc, $300 assistant for track
Any longtime teachers out there notice any patterns on the quality of new teachers starting within the last 5-10 years? Also, do new teachers now seem to last fewer or more years than in previous eras?
My kids, who just finished their first full years as high school teachers and coaches got: (rural Iowa): $1000 for coaching track and xc plus $24g for teaching; (urban St. Paul): $3500 each for xc and track on a base of $32g. The rural one is leaving, to go back to grad school. He'll work as a volunteer for local university xc team, I think.
And it's unfortunate...They can't find teacher/coaches where I am...they rely on lay coaches a lot..I'm one of them...I come from a family of teacher/coaches who have retired..I was just a distance runner for 28 years...We can't walk the halls and recruit..just a bunch of problems that made me realize that any school system serious about it's athletics will hire teacher/coaches.
No offense to all my brother lay coaches.

Quality-wise, I'd have to say better prepared as a group. I think colleges spend more time getting students into schools and working with students than they did in my day (I"m starting my 28th year of teaching this fall).
But I also notice that fewer want to make commitments beyond the minimum requirements of their teaching assignment, and I know more and more people who tend to view teaching as a job and not a calling. There are a lot of exceptions (like Greenliner's twins; who would stand out as first-rate teachers in any era). In particular, I notice that a lot of young coaches talk about "when they're getting out".
Head XC Coach $1400 (a team of about 80), Indoor Track $0, Outdoor Track $1700, Teaching aroung 50k.
Assistant winter: 4500
Asst. spring: 4500
Teaching: 47,500
This is an interesting thread. For all you high school coaches who think coaching college is great. After over 20 years at a very respectable Divison I school (very high academics and big time football) I make about $56,000 per year for a 12 month contract. I started out teaching in the public schools and the guys I started with are now making $70,000. Once we sat down and figured out what they have made since I left the public schools. In about 15 years they made about $225,000 MORE than I made during that time. While I love coaching at the collegiate level financially it is better to teach/coach at the high school level.
